Review by Macmike -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival unde...
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the first entry in the We are Voulhire series written by American author Matthew Tysz. It is a sci-fi fantasy novel; utilizing the first-person point of view for Galen, and third-person narration for other characters.
A king divides his kingdom among his four sons; which leads to a civil war in the "Lands of the Princes" as they are called. A dying uncle leaves his inheritance to his nephew, who is now lucky to escape the clash of the princes. Will he be as great as his uncle? Will he master smithing, with nothing but a small manual left behind by his uncle? Meanwhile, in Hillport, a powerful mage has been arrested for experimenting with bio-magic – a heinous crime. Could he be planning a vengeful return, while the kingdom is led to believe that he was executed? Why does the mere mention of his name instill fear in the hearts of men? After years of waiting, the terrorist group, Riva Rohavi, is ready to resurface. They are known to mercilessly kill hundreds and burn entire cities. What do they have in store for Voulhire this time round? The final chapters will reveal it all.
I loved the premise of the story. Matthew has created an entire world; complete with its characters, leaders, places, and unique events. He even provides a map of Voulhire at the beginning which, combined with a companion website and a glossary of terms, provides valuable information about the world of Voulhire. I would advise new readers to check these out first.
The other thing I loved is Galen's character. The first-person point of view used for him made me privy to his thoughts, thereby making it easy to understand him. I loved traveling with him, sharing his fears and amazement throughout the story. The author uses descriptive terms to sufficiently illustrate the scenes, thereby allowing the reader to form a vivid image. This made the book easy to follow and understand, as well as a very captivating read. Kudos to the author for a job well done.
This is the first entry into the We are Voulhire series. Therefore, it is mostly an introduction to the world of Voulhire and it was hard to understand the storyline initially. Also, the story was slow-moving at first which I found discouraging. These are the only aspects that I disliked about the book. However, using the extended reading sections will allow you to understand the book, especially the new terms used in this fantasy world.
The book is exceptionally well-edited, as I did not find any errors. The story is well structured – the author using the character under consideration as the title. I congratulate the author for a story well-written, and I rate the book four out of four stars. I recommend this book to all lovers of the sci-fi and fantasy genres. It contains all the elements of a thrilling fantasy novel: magic, civil war, terrorism, and epic expeditions. The book includes descriptions of violence and cringing murder scenes; for this reason, I do not recommend the book to sensitive people, or young readers.
