Review by NashTanui -- Wilderness Cry by Hilary L Hunt M.D.
Who is God, really? Wilderness cry by Hilary L. Hunt M.D explains the concept of God and the universe from a philosophical, religious, and scientific point of view. Raised in a Catholic home, the author grows up following every rule of the church to the latter. As he grows older, he starts noticing inconsistency in some of the church’s teachings. One of the things that greatly angered the author was the church’s standpoint on artificial birth control. When he gets married, the church is very much against artificial birth control. The author struggles to raise five children with his limited resources at the time. Over time, the church stops being vocal about artificial birth control, maybe out of fear of sounding politically incorrect. This, among other obvious contradictions in the church’s teachings, pushes the author to seek to understand God’s true nature with the help of the Bible, science, and historical writings.
In the introduction of the book, the author gives us an insight into how his doubts began to form. From the very onset, he believed that God was perfect. His extensive research goes into proving this point. From a scientific standpoint, the author explains how the big bang theory is proof of God’s perfection. With a simplified explanation, he paints a mental picture of how the universe came to be and God’s involvement in it. The author shows us how in several instances, the Bible and the church contradict God’s nature.
There was so much to like about the book. It covers many different themes that are very well organized in chapters. It is also clear that a lot of research went into the book. Every point made is supported by proof from various references. I enjoyed how some complex concepts like The Trinity are simplified in the book using very easy-to-grasp explanations. I loved how boldly the author expresses his, mostly unpopular, opinions. The book made me re-examine a lot of my beliefs.
I failed to agree with some of the author’s arguments. In one or two instances, I felt that he based his assertions on his personal opinions. This, however, did not make the book any less enjoyable.
I did not find any obvious errors in the book leading me to believe that it was professionally edited. It is a systematic, well-organized book with highly thought-provoking arguments. I gladly give this book a perfect four out of four stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to know more about God’s nature beyond what is taught in our churches. Those who do not believe in the existence of God may not relate much to the book.
