‘We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies’ is the first instalment in the book series named ‘We are Voulhire’ by Matthew Tysz. It falls under the historical fantasy and, science fiction genre. The book revolves around the journey of Galen Bray, a humble refugee from the war-stricken Land of the Princes who’s only ever known loss and destruction. It follows his journey to the seemingly prosperous land of Voulhire and his newfound understanding of freedom while Voulhire goes through its share of political chaos and conflict. It is interesting reading about Galen's inner dialogues as he encounters new experiences and meets various people after arriving in Voulhire where his long-lost uncle leaves him all the inheritance to build a new life for himself and leave the horrors of war and destruction behind.

The author goes on to discuss Voulhire’s history, origin and political scene through the perspective of various characters in the course of the book. The author focuses on establishing various aspects of the kingdom, supposedly, to build on in the rest of the instalments to come.

There is a lot to like about this book by Matthew Tysz. The writing is engaging and descriptive, and scene-setting is done well to picture it perfectly. There are various action scenes with sword fights, mages using magic spells which is fascinating to read. Importantly, the flow of the story and the plot of the book keeps one hooked. The characters in the book are interesting and described so well that they almost feel real. Like the character of Lord Meldorath who is portrayed as a powerful mage has an aura of great intrigue about him. The author uses his character to build on tense, mysterious plot points that leave one guessing and wanting more. One can tell how much thought the author has put into creating this magical imaginary universe. The towns and cities have their own personalities just like their people.

If there were a negative for me, it would probably be that the way the chapters were structured gets slightly confusing in a couple of places as the author switches between the perspective of the characters.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars because it has a great plot and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world of Voulhire and would be interested in reading the rest of the series.

Fans of fantasy, science fiction and magic enthusiasts around the age of 18 and above will enjoy reading this book. The book isn’t recommended for a younger audience as there are mentions of possible paedophilia and occasional profanity.
