Review of McDowell
McDowell is a fictional book written by author William H. Coles about a purely hedonistic man who lives life according to his pleasures and whims, indulging himself in deviant, careless and selfish acts without any concern for the people who are affected by his actions. The hero of this story is a medical doctor named Hiram McDowell, an expert at the top of his field. As the story begins, we see him leaving his friend to die on a mountain rather than risking his own life to save him. This is but one of the despicable acts that he commits as the story progresses. Through bribery and corruption, McDowell is appointed to the post of president of the International College of Surgeons and, upon getting there, immediately discards the men who supported his appointment.
McDowell continues in this pattern all his life, picking up enemies left and right as he uses people and throws them away like nothing. McDowell, being a widow with two children, decides to find a wife to mother his kids. He got married to a widow named Carole, who had children of her own. They combined their families, and for a time, all was bliss. However, it was not to be as McDowell soon resumed his old ways as he began to cheat on his wife and engage in deviant activities outside of his marriage. On top of all this, he failed to be there for his children, seeing them as unworthy of his attention and choosing instead to devote himself to the pursuit of greatness. Will McDowell ever be able to redeem himself? Will he be able to atone for all the wrongs he'd done? Or will he fall victim to his evil? This is the story of McDowell by William H. Coles.
This book was an overwhelmingly immersive read. It's a gritty novel showing a man at his worst with no false airs or pretentious behaviors but simply as an animal taking what he wants when he wants with no regard for those he leaves in his wake. The main character was a despicable man with no morals or good qualities. I hated him from the beginning of the story, yet I could not stop reading about his life, dreams, and faults. I constantly wished for his redemption and for him to see the light and repent of all his wrongdoings. I found myself rooting for him to change even as he displayed worse and worse behavior.
A purely narcissistic being with no impulse control and an utter lack of conscience, McDowell was a powerfully written character. William H. Coles built a world different from anything I had ever read before, and it was a heart-wrenching tale. He captivates you with depictions of sadness, violence, and brutality, and you find yourself saddened and discouraged as our hero goes further down the path of darkness and then lo and behold: light! I rejoiced as McDowell was forced to face the consequences of his actions and began a journey of self-reflection, as he recognized his wrongs and started to make attempts to fix them. The character development present in this book was well-written and spoke to the human capacity for change. I had no dislikes or issues with this book, and it was a page-turner from start to finish.
This book was professionally edited, and there were no errors in the text. I would rate McDowell by William H. Coles 4 out of 4 stars as it was a masterfully written book. I would recommend this book to readers interested in fictional stories of redemption or viewers of the Mad Men television drama as it was pretty similar to this.
