Arnold Gold is a private investigator living in Honolulu, Hawaii, but his roots can be found in Seattle, Washington. He is attempting to establish his business (Gold and Associates) in both cities, in spite of being a one-man show. Because his business is so small and new, it comes as a complete surprise to him when a prestigious Seattle based law firm reaches out to him with the offer of a job.

The job sounds like the offer of a lifetime and Arnold immediately wants to jump on it, but his intuition makes him pause. He is not given any important answers to questions regarding the nature of the job at hand, and the law firm is adamant that no FBI be involved in the case. He will only be filled in on the details by showing up and meeting in person with the law firm partners. Why all the secrecy? And why pick him when there are more well known private investigators already on the ground in Seattle?

Deadly Odds 4.0 by Allen Wyler is the fourth installment in the DEADLY ODDS series, but it is a book that can easily be read as a stand-alone. There is enough information throughout the story to catch a reader up on past events without spoiling any of the previous books. This was very well done in my opinion. I also found a minimal number of errors during my read, and believe this to be a professionally edited book.

I did have issues with the generous usage of the words ‘mondo’, ‘dude’, and a few others, however. I understand that the author was trying to set the location based on words common to the Pacific Coast, but I could not help the feeling that a teenage turtle was going to pop out of the woodwork at me every time such a word or phrase was used.

My grievances with this book are minor though, and I am rating it 4 out of 4 stars. The story line was good, and the pace fast. The mystery aspect was also quite interesting and had me second guessing my theories a few times.

This is not a book for all audiences in spite of my rating. Deadly Odds 4.0 was very heavy-handed in regards to profanity. A number of readers might be offended by this fact. It is offset by a lack of erotic and religious content, however.
