Living Forward After Loss: Rebuilding Your Life After Losing Your Life Partner by Kathleen Ho is an inspirational non-fiction book. It shares strategies for dealing with grief after losing a loved one. Death is inevitable to anyone alive, and it can be traumatizing to the family and loved ones of the deceased. But how do you deal with the pain of losing a loved one?

Kathleen Ho shares the challenges she faced after losing her husband, David, from a stroke. She talks about how she was lonely, empty inside, and full of grief when her husband passed away. She felt like she would not be able to move on with her life, to the extent of contemplating suicide. Kathleen details all the emotions she went through in the first 18 months after her husband died. After that period, she decided to focus on the happy memories she shared with her husband, and she was able to overcome the pain. Writing this book was therapeutic for her. It helped her heal, and it will also help others who are going through grief heal too.

This is a very emotional read. The author’s recollection of her husband’s final days is genuinely moving. The two shared a special bond. Her husband truly loved and cherished her, and she equally reciprocated that. This can be a lesson to practically show that genuine love exists. Kathleen effectively links the bond she shared with her husband to the lessons she passes across. This book has a mixture of inspiration quotes, information from experts, and personal stories. All this information can be beneficial in helping people find peace after the loss of a loved one.

I loved how the author is not afraid to be vulnerable when revealing the pain that she went through. She details how her friends played a massive role during her healing. For instance, a friend talked her out of committing suicide. She also details how she planned to be with others for the holidays. The advice offered is straightforward, and the language used is simple and easy to comprehend. The author uses a conversational tone that will be appealing to many readers.

This book had one downside. Some stories had a close resemblance to ones already shared; hence, it felt repetitive. There were several grammatical errors, but they did not affect the flow of the book. Putting everything into consideration, I still feel like this book deserves a perfect rating. I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to anyone who is grieving a loved one.
