Chloe couldn’t tell the difference between the vivid dreams she kept having about the past and her present day life. It all felt like a déjà vu. The dream felt so real, with her invisible friend ‘Lady’ always by her side, to guide her. Most of her dreams centered on the Native Americans that resided at manataka. All through her childhood years, her mother took her to several doctors thinking she had a mental disorder, but it was not until lady stopped appearing, that her nightmares stopped. Years later while working as a historian she came across a stone, which shone bright lights whenever she touched it. She decided to explore the origin of the stone. That was when she met Mason, a handsome Native American, who had his own agenda. Someone was trying to get him killed and when the beautiful, but naïve Chloe asked for a tour in the city, he couldn’t resist. This offered him the opportunity to find out what she knows about the stone and if she was hired to kill him, but both of them had to fight and kill the men that were sent after them. He rather fell in love with her and enjoyed every second of their lovemaking. He longed to know if the stone was the answer he sought, for he was immortal and had lived more than 200 years and wanted a way out of their world. Mason has virtually seen and lived life, wandering and waiting for the spell to be broken. He turned out to be Prince Kaye of manataka, whose tribe was threatened by the white man that found gold in their region. The tribes’ elders moved the village deep into the valley of vapors to protect them as the white man captured and conquered the neighboring villages. The tribe used magic to hide the path that led to the female mountain. Adsila, a young girl with magical power and Kayes’ beloved childhood friend was denied the position of ‘chenesis’ because she was a female, but she had some magical skills and a binding stone that she could communicate with. Out of fear, that his tribe would some be conquered, the young Prince Kaye who had a misunderstanding with his father after failing to convince him to negotiate and sell their land to the white people, betrayed his people by leading the white people to tribes domain, leading to their massacre. As the captain who led the massacre tried to rape Adsila, she cut him with the binding stone and fled. Kaye ran after her where he confessed that he has betrayed his tribe. She was disappointed, and with the binding stone still in her possession, cut her wrist and with a lock of hair belonging to Kaye which she grasped, placed a curse on him that he will continue to wander the earth for what he has done to his tribe. The captain was also affected by the curse as his blood was on the binding after he was cut. It turned out that he was now Chloes’ boss, who sought means to end his life as he was immortal too and after he found Mason, knew he was the solution he sought. Though Chloe didn’t know who she was, but she felt she had met Mason in her past life. The romantic relationship between the two was threatened after Chloe had a vision she was Adsila’s re-incarnate and Mason revealed who he was and how he betrayed his tribe. After Chloe forgave him and the spell was broken, he became mortal, but the on-going fight between Mason and Chloe’s’ boss (who was the captain in his former life) led to the captain’s death. The young lovers had to start all over again as their love flourished, grateful for another opportunity.

The Raven’s Trail by Liz D. Marx is one novel I enjoyed reading. The author was able to link the present to the past. It tells a story of Native Americans and how they were massacred after Prince Kaye betrayed his tribe. I also loved how she used and interpreted the local language. The intrigue was worthwhile, as I looked forward to knowing how the story ended. Mason played the tough guy part that was not ready for any commitment, but after taking Chloe on tour knew nothing would give him more pleasure than spending the rest of his life with her.

Though I enjoyed reading the book, I was saddened by the fights and killings in the novel. Aside that it was a wonderful piece to read.

I found no errors after reading the novel and will rate it four out of four stars as it was well edited. I recommend the book for history lovers and those who believe in magic.
