Teardrop by Lauren Kate

Post by jmalone1994 »

Never, ever cry... Seventeen-year-old Eureka won't let anyone close enough to feel her pain. After her mother was killed in a freak accident, the things she used to love hold no meaning. She wants to escape, but one thing holds her back: Ander, the boy who is everywhere she goes, whose turquoise eyes are like the ocean. And then Eureka uncovers an ancient tale of romance and heartbreak, about a girl who cried an entire continent into the sea. Suddenly her mother's death and Ander's appearance seem connected, and her life takes on dark undercurrents that don't make sense. Can everything you love be washed away?

When I first read the synopsis of this book I thought it was very intriguing and was excited to jump into it. However, after fighting my way through the over 400 pages of this book I have to say I am very disappointed.

The main problem I had with this book is the female protagonist, Eureka (seriously, that name?). From the beginning of the book Eureka was whiny and self-centered. She acts as if everyone in the world is plotting against her which I feel makes her come off as very childish. In fact, all of these character flaws are pointed out later in the book, but the character development that occurs with her character is little to none.

Another problem I had with this book was the speedy romance. With young adult books I am used to unrealistic, quick romances but the romance in this book was ridiculous. Eureka jumps from one spectrum to another mentioning how completely in love she is one second and then talking about how she doesn't know the person the next. It is extremely contradictory and frustrating.

Along with its other faults the book has little to nothing happen in it. The majority of the book is Eureka's whiny tirades with the only real action happening in small random parts of the book. Overall, I would say that this was a very interesting concept, but a concept that was poorly executed by Lauren Kate. I am sorry to say that I most likely will not be reading the sequel.

I absolutely loved the fallen series, so I was planning on reading this at some point. Sounds shallow, but I kept holding off because I didn't like her name. Good to know that I shouldn't bother :D

I attempted to read a copy of it I got from my local library and just couldn't get into. I was feeling bad for not giving it a better go but from this review I would say you are right and I don't need to feel bad. I sensed it wouldn't get better.

I hated the Fallen series but I thought maybe it's just this one series, maybe her other books aren't so bad.
Well, apparently they are.. Thanks for the heads up.

I have to disagree with the reviewer on this one. I really enjoyed the book overall and believe it will be a great series. Plus I love Lauren Kate books. While it might not be for everyone if you like her other books I would recommend that you give it a chance by getting it from a library. Give it a shot and if you start it and just aren't interested then you can easily just put it down and try something else. You might wind up actually liking it since people do enjoy different types of books.

I loved the Fallen series and Teardrop! I'm surprised so many people disliked it.

I actually loved both the Fallen series and Teardrop. I picked up Teardrop because of who the author was.
I admit that the title didn't really catch my attention, however it is a fitting title for the story. The author is what caught my attention.
