Review of Searching For Paradise
Do you ever wonder about your daily nine-to-five routine and not having the chance to live your dreams? Searching for Paradise by T.L.Hughes novel will bring us the experience of Mike Hogan’s journey to living his dream of not working the nine-to-five job again. This novel brings us to 1984, where some of us might not experience it yet and for me it is so exciting.
It all began when Mike could not fulfill his showbiz dream in California and ended up working some unpaid movie production and other part time jobs. Mike and two of his friends, Decky and Luke, finally plan to drive across America to the East Coast and from there they fly to London to work overseas in the music video industry. They execute the plan with money from their savings and loan and stop by their family and friends' houses along the way.
They go through a fun and memorable trip, where they get the chance to catch up and share stories with their friends and family. They also meet some new people. When they meet their family, I can feel that they are having a great time together since they spend a long time separated from each other for work.
As a person that lives outside America, I feel like this novel brings me to a trip crossing America in the past. I can get the details of the places that they visit and the 80s vibes really showing with the songs reference and artists from the era. I get other details that I have never experienced before too, like calling from a payphone, taking turns driving and sleeping in the car, and how they interact with new friends along the way. T.L. Hughes managed to wrap up Mike and his best friend's trip in a coherent and enjoyable story to read. In each of its journeys, this 200-page novel feels longer than it should be -- in a good way.
In his journey, Mike as the main character in this novel provides various nostalgic experiences and his perspective on various things, including in terms of beliefs and past experiences. I like how the author puts one way to see the life perspective in Mike’s point of view, who has just lost his love for Colette and has so many questions about life. During less than a month of Mike's journey in this novel, I also like to see the details of their lives, where they always make time to exercise and sleep wherever they take turns during the trip.
I couldn't find anything I didn't like about this novel. The narration that clearly describes what is on Mike's mind feels real and makes us feel relatable as a child who is in a period of quarter life crisis. I believe it was professionally edited since I encountered only a few typos in the text. I would like to rate Searching for Paradise four out of four stars. I recommend this book to everyone above 18 that loves historical fiction. Teenagers over the age of 13 who love travelling stories in general may also enjoy reading this book, since the story theme is quite general.
