Review of Tales of the Seventies

Don, an ex-businessman, who fell from grace, tries to turn around his fortunes by renting the fifth floor of an old derelict building. He hires a team of tele-operators, whom he gets to sell tickets for a concert to benefit the Blind San Franciscans. These operators pick out random names from the telephone directory, and call, seeking for potential clients by convincing them to buy tickets for a concert to benefit the Blind San Franciscans. Once a sale is made, the operator confirms the number of tickets required by the client, and also confirms their address.

The operator hands the confirmation to Don, who in turn encloses the tickets into an envelope addressed to the client. He does not forget to also enclose an return envelope addressed to Don, by which the client is going to mail back with the payment. At the end of the day, Don would have made hundreds of envelopes, ready to post to unsuspecting clients. This goes on for several days.

But being human, two of these operators become suspicious of the whole setup. They connive to go and inspect the venue for the concert. They find an old unused building, without any sign at all, that it is being made ready for the concert.

TALES-OF-THE-SEVENTIES by David Done is a collection of 8 fascinating short stories of everyday life situations one can encounter. I had to summarize just one story in order to avoid too long a review. What I found fascinating about the tales is that the the author did not bring most of the stories to their logical conclusion, preferring instead to leave the stories hanging, such that
the reader has to make his or her own conclusions, as to what could have happened in the end. Take the case of Don the ex-businessman, the author did not go further and explain what happened in the end. Did Don get into trouble with the law or did he just disappear?

I found the book to be a great read and was well edited. The book contains scenes of sexual nature and is suitable for adult readers only. I rate the book 3 Stars out 4 Stars.
