Review of The Fourth Kinetic
[Following is a volunteer review of "The Fourth Kinetic" by Brady Moore.]
Rion Grean has spent his life moving from one place to the next. After a few months at a new school and a few months of his mom acting more and more strange, it is time to move again. As they are leaving town something happens; they are attacked. This forces Rion to expose his deepest secret, his telekinetic abilities, in order to make his getaway. He then goes on the run, where he is separated from his mother, and then is saved by a group of people with similar powers as his. As he learns about these new people, he also searches to find his mother. In Brady Moore’s, The Fourth Kinetic: Clairvoyants, Rion grows as a person as he meets new friends and goes on new adventures.
Not only is this novel fun to read with its great humor and exciting fights, but it also touches on finding yourself when lost and learning what family truly means. Moore goes about talking about these topics in such a great way as well. He very subtly unfurls the unrest in these characters based on these topics and then resolves this unrest in such a loving way. There is nothing but love and support for Rion Grean and his friends, and it is a beautiful thing to read.
One thing that led to confusion while reading The Fourth Kinetic, was how Moore explained the different powers. When Moore had the characters explain the multiple powers to Rion the characters only explained the powers to a certain point. For instance, they mentioned some people in the group saw things, and then they moved on. That was the extent of their explanation for that power. If Moore were to add more details, then the specifics would be much clearer, especially in that moment of discovery that Rion was going through.
I recommend this novel to teenagers/young adults who love superhero stories. These characters all possess some kind of power, and this novel explores them learning and growing their power. I would also recommend this novel to fans of James Patterson’s Maximum Ride. They have many similar characteristics and both stories are so much fun.
I would rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. All of the messages that Moore incorporates in his writing of The Fourth Kinetic, make reading the novel not only enjoyable but also beneficial to those who are still learning who they are or those who are figuring out who they want to be. That being said, this is a great, family-friendly novel to read if you want adventures and heroes in your life.
