Review of Surviving Life As An Actor
Surviving Life As An Actor by Jerry a. Greenberg is, as the name suggests, a work of fiction revolving around the lives of strugglers in the entertainment industry. The author beautifully describes the usual lives of people who struggle for years before gaining success.
Marnie, a girl with big dreams of Hollywood enrols herself in USC for a better future where she meets like-minded friends. The book is all about the struggles of Marnie and her friends. The ups-and-downs of their lives are described gracefully. The author provides a vivid description of life from the perspective of struggling actors and writers. Read this book to get a glimpse into the struggle new actors go through to create their identity.
The author has done an amazing job describing the different characters. Though the book is a work of fiction, I could visualize the various emotions of the characters. The love, joy, agony – everything felt surreal. The ups-and-downs of a middle-class family are brought to life in an interesting manner. Each chapter created more interest in the story and I was hooked to the story till the very last. The author included daily experiences of a common man which further increased my interest in the book.
Though the book mentions a lot of problems strugglers in the entertainment industry face, a few major problems were left unmentioned. Issues like fitness and sexual harassment were not brought to the spotlight. The struggle period of around a decade was also not brought to much light. And the errors in the book disturbed my reading experience. Other than that, I could not find any noticeable flaws in the book.
The character of Donnie was what I liked the most in the book. He was dedicated to his work and found ways to pursue his dream career even though he did not have all the resources. He defied all odds and achieved his goal. He did not get any roles until he was acting for the camera. When he let his emotions out and showed what he truly felt, he got the role. His traits made me like him the most out of all the characters in the book.
I would not label this book as professionally edited because of the number of errors I found in the book. I would rather conclude this book is sloppily edited. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the sloppy editing and the absence of issues that were worth mentioning.
I would recommend this book to people who are fans of fiction that is closer to reality. This is a must-read for people who want to know more about the entertainment industry. This book has minimal sexual content and is safe for children to read. But there are instances of depression, hopelessness and suicide, so I would not recommend this book to people sensitive to it.
