Dan Wakefield

Post by hopeingod »

On Netflix, a few days ago, I watched a documentary called "New York in the Fifties," in which numeorus writers from the 50s were interviewed and revealed the booz soaked lifestyle they formed among other aspiring liberal writers. It was a very interesting film, which led me to seek out the writing of one interviewed, Dan Wakefield, the man who produced the film and also did time with that gang of bohemians.

Those days were filled with liquor of all kinds, which was the preferred mind alternator for all those writers. Many became intense alcoholics, some experiencing withdrawal symptoms from alcohol for years afterwards. Dan Wakefield gained my attention as he was the one who described those days more often than others interviewed. Robert Redford also lived among those bohemians at that time and spoke.

Wakefield's coverage of the trial against two white men accused of killing a fourteen year old black boy for The Nation magazine called "Justice in Sumner" I found online and thought it was well written for being the first thing he ever had published.
