Review of How To Be Successful
How to be Successful: Think like a leader by M Curtis McCoy is a motivational and self-help book. M Curtis McCoy is a type-1 diabetic and brain cancer survivor. He tells the readers through his personal stories and observations, how to be successful.
This book contains true stories of people he met on his way, people he was deeply influenced by. For instance, he recalls meeting a person who was so addicted to his drinking problem that his family left him. He was wandering in the street with no roof over his head. But he didn’t lose hope and decided to change his life even when he had nothing left. He worked hard consistently towards his goal that he now owns several luxury cars, beautiful bungalows and what not. He became successful because he wanted to. M Curtis McCoy through stories such as this implores the readers that no matter how hard life may become, we should focus only on our goals, dreams and aspirations.
M Curtis McCoy interviews people from diverse backgrounds and asks questions like the definition of success for them. All the eight people he interviewed, gave different answers to the same questions. They quoted examples from their life and gave reasons to support their answers. What is surprising is that even though their experiences were different, their learnings from those experiences, were mostly the same. Their language was different but the content was the same. Now, what do we readers take from that? The syllabus to succeed in the test of life is not very hard or different. We just have to learn from mistakes, listen to the lessons of others, understand different situations, stay calm and focus on achieving our ambitions.
He also covers several good habits and keys that we should adopt in our daily life. His style is very unique. He doesn’t tell the readers something and blindly asks them to follow it. He presents both sides of the coin and lets us decide for ourselves. That, according to me, is the best part of this book. Also, the book is full of inspirational and motivational quotes. It enriches the readers with a sense of fulfilment and contentment. I have some useful takeaways from the book. I would like to quote one of his lines- “Life is a competition. You compete for everything you deserve.” Everything depends on our mindset. If we think we can do anything, we CAN do anything. All we have to do is start with a positive outlook, everything that happens after that will be positive too.
There is a negative side to this book too. M Curtis McCoy asks the same questions from every person. So, sometimes reading answers to the same questions feel a little monotonous, especially when the answers are one page long.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This book is professionally edited. I didn’t find a single error throughout the book. It is motivational and I had some great takeaways. It is a short, simple and quick read. However, I deduct one star because it was not a page-turner. It was monotonous in some places. I wish there was more, more stories that normal, average people could relate to. I recommend this book to everyone, kids, adults, students and entrepreneurs. Everyone should read it. There are some biblical references in this book. So, if anyone has a problem with reading religious texts should refrain from reading this book.
