Killing Your Best Friend by Valda Taurus is a psychological thriller set in modern day times. It revolves around an off-the-grid neighborhood in which two particular families are enveloped in an invigorating murder. Tammy, a main character in the story, lives next door to Marta and Alexander with her husband Dustin. Unable to sleep one night, she witnesses a key event in the story whilst looking out the window. The next morning, she is woken up to the news of Alexander’s best friend, Ivan, having been murdered. The main suspect? Alexander himself.

While there unfortunately wasn’t much I personally enjoyed about this book, I did appreciate the plot of the story in regard to the idea of killing your best friend. This definitely grabbed my attention and is why I had chosen to read further. I also liked the character development and backstories that helped to better understand the actions and reactions of each individual. I feel if written appropriately, it has great potential to become a staple in the Thriller genre.

A major issue I found with the book was over punctuating, or lack thereof, and countless spelling errors. There were a plethora of sentences that were incredibly elongated and included multiple commas. In between these longer sentences, there would be fragments and sentences that didn’t correctly use punctuation to begin with. I also found certain descriptions of events to be confusing, sloppy, and frivolous. One example of a confusing description is in regard to delving into the thoughts of a character. There were a few instances where the novel would be discussing multiple people in multiple scenarios, and then cut to what was going on in one individual’s mind without any warning. I also found that a lot of parts of the story seemed to have been written more as fillers than anything that added to the story positively. One more issue I had was the predictability of who ended up being the murderer. I’ve never read a book that I was able to clearly identify who it was shortly into reading until this.

To be honest, I don’t think I would recommend this book to anyone I personally know, but some other people may find enjoyment out of reading it. Most likely those who are beginners in reading the thriller genre. While sloppily written in a lot of areas, the basic premise is a good idea and is even what helped me to finish it.

I am rating this book 2 out of 4 stars. My reasoning behind this is that while the premise is a great idea that could easily be turned into a can’t-put-down thriller, it lacks a lot of basic needs for a concise and seamless beginning to end. I had found quite a few spelling errors, as well as incorrect use or overuse of punctuation, and bleary lines whilst attempting to transition from a specific scenario to a character’s thoughts. While I do believe this book was professionally edited, I feel as if there was a possibility that it had been rushed or overlooked in many parts.
