Special Operations Executive agent Sandra Eden makes the 3000 feet journey from a plane to the ground with a parachute that doesn't work and is believed to be dead until the agent sent to replace her confirms her survival. From her landing in Normandy, France, she executes mission after mission in coalition with the local French resistance, in an attempt to halt the Nazi invasion into France.

Sandra's orders are to cause disruptions in the crucial sections of the German presence in Normandy and to do it quickly. She garners respect from her predominantly male resistance allies with her efficiency and speed, as she leads them through many risky operations and redefines how many of them view the war and their reasons for fighting.

What I love the most about Sandra Eden's War is the fact that it celebrates the victories of a woman in the second world war without making her out to be any more or her male counterparts any less mortal, as many extreme feminist fictions tend to. Also, Mike Low crafted the story in such a realistic way that allows the reader to experience the thrill of Sandra's job without pondering the feasibility of her activities.

One of the drawbacks I experienced while reading this book is that the author states quite unnecessarily the direct meanings of the actions of his characters. As a result, readers don't have the opportunity to infer for themselves simple ideas that would have been sufficiently clear even without added explanations. I feel that this takes away from the general experience of reading this book. The other drawback, and the major reason why I wouldn't give the book a four out of four rating, is the presence of loose ends. The brief appearance of Agent Simon Gerrish, for example, does not connect to the story in any way but seems like a random attempt at mentioning other SOE agents.

The book is an overall success for its ability to effectively communicate the author's feelings on the invaluable contribution of SOE agents in the fight to secure the liberation of Europe from Nazi control. For this reason, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Mike Low's expert skill at building anticipation at every stage of planning and execution of Sandra's ambushes on the German forces, in addition to the top-notch editing would not let me rate this book any lower, if anything I would add 0.5 points to my rating if I could.

If you love suspense, excitement, and thrills, you would find this book fitting to your taste. If you've never heard about the SOE agents of World War two and are curious, this book would be highly informative.
