Review of The Reel Sisters
TheReel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a story about the power of friendship. Friendship is a great binding force that should not be looked down on. The impact of friendship is exposed in this book.
The Reel Sisters tells the story of five women, all of different ages and different professional, coming together as a result of their interest in fly fishing which binds them together. Circumstances bring them together and they decide to give friendship a try. They share their thoughts, emotions, happiness and doubt together as each passing day brings them closer and closer to each other. Find out where their relationship leads them in this interesting book The Reel Sisters.
The Major theme in this book was the theme of friendship, however there were minor themes that came to play in this book. These themes include theme of love, separation, curiosity, adventure and theme of unity.
The plot of this book was well developed as the events of the book took turns to occur, from the events that lead to the coming together of the team to their adventure after coming together. The setting was in the mountain, precisely in a cabin. This was due to the nature of their recreational activity which required them to be close to a water body.
The language of the author was simple. The author made use of the first person point of view in which each character was a narrator. Each character had a story to tell and the author expressed this without confusing the reader.
What I liked most about the book was not really the fly fishing adventure but the ties that existed between the five ladies. All of different age bracket stayed together, talked together and cried together as if they were age mates. This made me realize that age is not really the determinant factor of a relationship.
Another thing I liked about the book was the humour in the book. They were perfectly scattered around the book and it was so difficult for one not to laugh at the sight of these.
One of those incidents that the author added humour to the situation was when Melody was rescued. This also happens to be my favorite part of the book. The atmosphere was tense, a girl had just been rescued from the raging wave, naked. Everyone was surprised and worried but all Sophie could ask her was "were you naked when you fell in or did the river rip you clothes off?" It was so funny and I began to wonder if the river has ever stripped anybody naked.
There was only one thing o did not like about the book, the women were always using vulgar language and cusses. An example of this is seen in page 61 paragraph 3 - "holy sh*t. This water is f****g cold". That was Melody when she was observing the temperature of the water. The author would have expressed this without the f-word.
Aside the use of vulgar language, there was nor else I hated about the book. It had a message of friendship to pass across and a wealth of knowledge on fly fishing. It was also professionally edited and the characters were fully developed. For these reasons, I give it 3 stars out of 4 stars. I would have given it a perfect rating if not for the constant use of cussing words.
I recommend it to all lovers of fishing, fly fishing and adventure because it is exceptionally detailed to entertain them
