Review of Higher Ground
Higher Ground was first published as one of the chapters in a book named "Success." In this chapter, Dr. Sophia Edwards-Bennett shared her thoughts about what success means to her and how to achieve it. This standalone book includes the content of this chapter and more. In this version, a chant for cancer patients, bonus prose, and commentaries were added.
It's rare to find a successful, thoughtful, and diligent doctor, let alone one who writes beautiful prose. Her writing style is captivating and draws people in. In short, she is not your average doctor. Dr. Sophia Edwards-Bennett, known to her patients as Dr. EB, is a radiation oncologist who found her purpose in life and was keen enough to realize it by giving it her all. According to her, her success is the success of her patient's healing. By healing, she means treating both the clinical disease and the psychological aftermath that accompanies it. She focuses on the inside struggles of cancer patients that go unnoticed.
In this book, she shares her vision and her method of practice. For example, she discusses the "probing questions." Those are questions she asks each patient to gain adequate knowledge to tailor her individualized "Big C Re-Attitudes" framework. This program contains seven areas of work that need to be addressed. These areas include: reappraisal of life, restoration of hope, and reclamation of identity, to name a few. The formulated approach is implemented at the diagnosis stage, and helps the patients cope and overcome the emotional stress that comes with cancer.
I liked the "Prose of Ponder" the most. Cancer is an exhausted topic, but this book is definitely different from what you read before. Dr. EB's writing style is the key ingredient here. In this book, the topic is handled poetically, emotionally, and intimately. The chant for cancer patients, which you'll find at the end of the book, is also one of my favorite bits in the book.
As already clarified, the book is poetic in nature. While I love this quality about it, I still found that the book lacked practical instruction, especially regarding "The Big C Re-Attitudes" framework. If it is to be implemented, the information enclosed in this book may not be sufficient.
I give Higher Ground by Sophia Edwards-Bennett MD PhD. 4 out of 4 stars. The text is clear and eloquent. Many parts were chants or poem-like verses, so that gives it a fair amount of freedom when it comes to editing. With that in mind, I believe the book is professionally edited. I found a few errors, but they weren't major or frequent.
I recommend this book to caregivers, family members, and friends of cancer patients as well as cancer patients themselves. It's a new perspective that needs to be acknowledged and given attention to. This book is an "access to the psychological landscape" of cancer patients given to you by their medical guardian. I'm sure you've already read a book or two about cancer, but did you read one that incorporates a mystical point of view of the topic? Not really? Well, here's one for you. Enjoy!
