Twisted But True by Darren Burch is a journey into the humorous, gnarly life of a police officer. Retired Sargent Darren Burch gives a detailed account of two factors in his life: his family and career. The journey begins with a car accident caused by a reckless driver. Darren and his friends rescue two male passengers and try to get to one of the girls before fire engulfs the wreckage. Unfortunately, they do not save her life. The loss affects Darren so profoundly it sparks an insatiable need and passion for saving lives. Darren’s passion for saving lives leads him through his career in the military and later in the police force. The book combines multiple stories about some of the cases Darren handles in his career in law enforcement.

I love the plot and content of the book. The cases featured in the book contain twists that are gnarly, dark, humorous, and enthralling. However, there are details about Darren’s personal life. At the end of his military career, Darren's status as a single father affects his chances of joining the CIA. Darren’s love and concern for his child shine through in his decision to join the police force so he can be there for his child and later his wife. The book focuses on stories related to law enforcement in a way that conveys Darren’s qualities and personality. I also loved the twisted tales. My favorite is Chasing Mad Cow. The dark humor and funny scenarios are hilarious. The author portrays the progressive growth of Darren’s career through the twisted tales of the cases he handles.

The technical aspects of writing are commendable. The plot flows fluidly from beginning to end. There is good character development. Most of the characters feature briefly in the story. The author describes and builds up the characters within the story or scene without affecting the story momentum or creating plot holes. The story outline is also deliberate and leads to the progression of the story. However, I think the editing could be better because I did notice some typographical errors.

I enjoyed reading Twisted But True by Darren Burch. It is a thrilling cop story infused with dark humor and twisted tales. It is interesting reading the first-person account of arrests and criminal takedowns from the perspective of an officer. The only thing I dislike about the book is the typos. I rate Twisted But True by Darren Burch three out of four.

I recommend the book to adult readers looking for a thrilling nonfiction book. The violent and graphic details in some of the scenes are not suitable for people under sixteen years. Additionally, some of the content on abuse can trigger people with abuse-related anxiety.
