Review of Beneath the Muscle
Beneath the Muscle is a book written by Lauren Powers, a famous bodybuilder. The book talks about the life of the author with a few lessons she learned and an interesting set of questions to implement them in the reader's life. The title is perfect since it talks about a person who is known for her muscles. There is a very interesting look at life through her eyes and it's aimed to be a source of inspiration.
In the first pages, it's easy to understand a little bit of the strong person she is. Lauren Powers is a really smart, clever, and resilient woman. I didn't know much about her before reading the book but I am, now, incredibly amazed by the life she lives. Her experiences are vast and she thinks about life with a renaissance mindset: There's nothing wrong with being lots of people and doing lots of things instead of focusing on a single path in life. The strength she had to push through barriers (physical, psychological, and social) is admirable. Personally, I enjoyed the way she talked about overcoming her drug addiction and how she kept sober throughout the years. I was overjoyed, to read about her journey to become a firefighter.
In addition, I truly enjoyed the storytelling of the book, it made me feel like I was having a conversation with a friend instead of reading about someone else's life. It's great to feel like you are connecting with someone and to read with this mindset pleases me a lot. The way she opened up her heart on a few sentences and talked about bullying and dealing with, as she calls them, naysayers, felt genuine and warm, proving that you can be a strong and kind person at the same time. Moreover, the words used in the book are engaging and the pace is really nice, it feels like a short ride but I didn't feel like something was lacking, it was just the right length.
Because of the amazing experience I had, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There was no negative thing, in my perspective. It fulfills the purpose of the author as her story is, as a matter of fact, motivating. Plus, there are little bits of her family life and pictures that were a nice add-on to the connection offered to the readers.
In short, I would recommend this to readers of autobiographies and lovers of self-development books. Also, to the fans of Lauren Powers, bodybuilding enthusiasts, lovers of character-building stories, and overall athletes.
