Review of The McCoys Before The Feud
The McCoYS: Before the Feud by Thomas A. McCoy is a historical fiction novel that is based on the McCoy family. The Kansas-Missouri border war of 1865 saw the southerners pay a heavy price. The Northerner general, who was corrupt, had looted valuables that belonged to the southerners, leaving them in extreme poverty. In a quest for justice for the southerners, Thomas McCoy Jr. (Tommy) had to come up with plans to take back the bounty stolen from the southerners. This meant that he had to come up with soldiers who would help in the retrieval of the valuables and fighting the northern soldiers. Tommy receives support from his father, who had been wounded in the war but had vowed to be by his son’s side and help him on his mission. They had vowed to bring back what was rightfully theirs or die trying.
What I liked about this novel is the aspect of love, sacrifice, and togetherness. Tommy had to put off engagements with Teresa and concentrate on the war. Despite that, they were in contact, though not frequently. Tommy had to sacrifice his love for the fight for justice. Terry received crucial information which was important. She did not hesitate to inform Tommy, so she asked him to find her. She gave Tommy money and the maps that were crucial to the whole mission. Was it not for love, she could be holding a grudge after Tommy chose war and not her. She could have chosen to keep quiet and not lend help where necessary. The southern soldiers bonded together throughout the war. The strong bond made them a one united family that focused on one major goal-justice.
The novel was interesting, but there was this point of repetition in the raids that could be boring and ruin the taste of the novel. The author could have differentiated instead of making the raids seem the same. Another aspect which I was not impressed with is how the southerners chose those who would carry out the mission. The criteria used could jeopardize the whole mission since the ones who went to the meeting in the valley were the ones who carried out the mission yet the North’s used handpicking criteria where those who were better were to carry out a mission.
I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. It is a very interesting historical fiction that will keep you glued to it as you will want to know what happened next. There is a great flow of events, hence the flow of the fiction is understood easily.
I recommend this novel to those who like history, something related to the battlefield, twists and turns of events, as this novel is the right choice for that. It will shock you and give you surprises you would not have thought of.
