Review of Randy the Irresistible
What does a character necessarily have to do to merit the title “Irresistible”? Must he be a playboy? Must he have charm as bewitching to women as James Bond’s? Or maybe he just needs to have tons of over the top adventures. Whatever definition you choose, and with a name that speaks for itself, our man for the role is Randy Love.
There are possibly two things you first need to know about Randy. One, he is the black sheep of his family. Literally, he is the most uncommitted and carefree of the three Love children, of which the elder two siblings before him are a lawyer and an architect. Two, he has the looks. When you combine a mischievous, nonchalant and non-conformist attitude with good looks, sprinkled with a lot of youthful indiscretion, you end up getting SM Goodier’s Randy the Irresistible.
After spending a gap year in the United States of America, Randy Love returns to the United Kingdom with a secret that would further disappoint his dad if he were to reveal it to him. Simultaneously, Randy is in two minds as to whether he wishes to continue with his university education or not.
Whilst contemplating upon this important decision, Randy’s troubles only begin when he decides to move out on his own and find a job. With looks as good as his, he is bound to definitely attract, among other things, unwanted attention. How will Randy handle these situations? Will his youthful tendencies and mischievous nature get in his way when he finally finds a job? What about his secret, will he manage to conceal it from his father? Find the answers to all of these questions in the exciting journey that SM Goodier invites you on in Randy the Irresistible.
I really did enjoy reading Randy the Irresistible. I think this book deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. As a modern day coming of age story, Randy the Irresistible does an incredible job of capturing some of the challenges that young people face, as well as some of their behaviours that they themselves can only describe in hindsight as funny. The author clearly has a knack for story-telling. He managed to bring every single character to life.
One positive thing about the book is how the author infuses humour into the plot in several ways, such as when he described Randy and his friends’ drinking escapades. The author also did an amazing job with respect to the use of dialogue. These brought the characters to life more as they exchanged clashing viewpoints amidst the delivery of some insightful thoughts. My favourite character in this regard would be Michael Goddard.
The book was well edited with only a few mistakes. I absolutely enjoyed the book so much that I did not find anything negative about it to report. This book is such an amazing read that almost everyone would enjoy it. However, I would specifically recommend it to young adults.
