Rise of the Savior: Acolyte of Truth by Antoine Bonner follows the life of a teenage girl as she discovers she is destined to save the world. Amanda has just finished high school and she’s yet to decide which college to go to. She is involved in a car accident with her father on their way from her karate tournament. When she wakes up, Logan, her father, is in critical condition. Jamie, Logan’s doctor, offers to help him survive but Amanda does not know how he will help. She later learns she was saved by her deity, Ameena. Amanda meets her kundalini Lena and she learns she is the acolyte of truth. Her destiny is to save the world from the destroyer. When she can barely defeat another teenager in a karate tournament, will she be able to save the world?

As she starts to realize there is more to life than meets the eye, Amanda learns the reason why her six-year-old sister Saira has been acting like a robot is because she is also an acolyte. After losing both their parents at the hand of Jamie, Amanda and Saira stick together and get stronger preparing for the ultimate fight. Will they be able to defeat the destroyer?

Antoine Bonner did a great job at writing a fast-paced and action-packed fantasy. Her execution of plots was on point. While reading I could easily visualize the plots and it felt like watching a movie. I loved how she turned an ordinary girl into the savior of mankind. As much as it is fantasy, it shows even the least expected people can be destined for greatness. The sense of humor was genius. It ensured a relaxed read. The character development was excellent. Each character, no matter how small, played an essential role in the ultimate storyline and also the development of Amanda’s character. The book was written from the third-person point of view. This made me feel like I was watching the characters from a distance, making it feel like I am in a cinema.

The author managed to show that there is a fine line between good and bad. Trying to do something good while you make other people suffer does not make your ultimate goal the right thing. This is evident in Jamie’s character. As much as he was trying to save his son, he crossed the line of humanity and could not even see the wrong in what he was doing. I also loved the theme of family and sacrifice in the book. Amanda’s parents gave their lives for their daughters. Jamie loved his son he would do anything for him. Amanda was also willing to sacrifice herself to save the world. After losing her parents, she finds family in Kid, the acolyte who recruited her.

The book was professionally edited. I only encountered a few minor errors. The vocabulary was not heavy, which made it an easy read and that much more enjoyable. However, I felt like the book could have used an index. There were a lot of spiritual-fantasy terms I could not understand and I had to google to grasp the concepts. This got frustrating at times and an index would have saved me a lot of reading time. This being the only thing I disliked about the book, I still rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

There is profanity throughout the book, making it suitable for young adults. Lovers of fantasy will enjoy reading it. There are scenes that involve the murder of children even though they are not described in detail or agony, sensitive readers should be ready for this. If you are skeptical about fantasy, deities, and superheroes, then it is probably best if you stay away from this book.
