The Successful Manager by James Potter and Mike Kavanagh truly discussed the subject deeply and in great detail, which clearly showed that these authors are very experienced and knowledgeable on what they are trying to convey and tell. The book had their chapters aligned perfectly with the flow from the very basics to certain specific topics that I am pretty much sure the readers won’t even realize they need to know, especially for their targeted audiences. In general, it contains what the reader is supposed to do and change, when will their advice and techniques be useful, how to be adaptable in the leading role or position, the challenges a leader would have to face and many more the reader will discover as they read through.

Unlike any other motivational or coaching books that I’ve read so far, this book really don’t beat around the bush and get straight to the point on what they want to deliver, which I find very refreshing because it does not make me feels like I’m in a boring speech conference that purposely makes their points unnecessary long than it supposed to. Honestly, I would have difficulty highlighting anything because every single sentence feels somewhat important to a point that if I skip one or two paragraphs I would miss many important messages. Other than that, I can tell that they picked their words very carefully so it is easy to read and consume. Every punch line gives a strong energy to keep the reader motivational, so it really hooked me up to keep reading. Plus, the end chapter was really comforting or rather heartwarming as it simply feels like a letter of encouragement or a pat on the back for the reader once their coaching, the book, ends.

Personally, I think there’s nothing much to dislike about the book except that I feel like the author is getting lazy or tired at the middle of the chapters, but they picked themselves up quite quickly by the form of language they used. This could be just me as I actually quite enjoy it from how highly I praised them.

If I could be very strict or picky, I did find one grammatical error (on page 86, first paragraph, line 1 and 5-6. That is to replace 'to' with 'for' instead) but it’s not very severe as the reader still can understand what the author is trying to tell without any problem. Maybe with another round of editing would make it better or if possible, perfect. With that, I would very much stand by my rating which I rate it four out of four stars. The book gives a clear perspective from both the manager and their team but it not only can be referred to managers specifically, but also for anyone with any kind of leading role or to-be in general, including a mere student who is leading for a short or long term group assignment. In conclusion, I highly recommend giving this book a try for those who are interested in leading management and development as this book definitely would be worth the reader’s time as it did to me.
