Who is a successful manager? A successful manager is a leader who gets the job done through other people. Who are these other people? A team. With this definition, one thing is clear- there has to be a team. The Successful Manager by James Potter and Mike Kavanagh is a realistic, detailed and practical book that will make a manager successful in managing his or her team. One of the authors, James Potter, an experienced manager and mentor, is the Chief Commercial Officer at Dunes Point Capital and has enabled more than 100 organizations and their teams reach their full potential using his hands-on approaches.

James Potter and Mike Kavanagh set off by giving valid reasons why you should aim to become a top-tier manager then go on to giving seven characteristics of great managers. Simply be a T.E.A.C.H.E.R. Literally, be a teacher by coaching your team members and as an acronym be Transparent, Emphathetic, Adaptable, a Clear Communicator, Humble, Empowering and Responsive.

To be able to hone these skills, the authors insist on the importance of moving out of your comfort zone and practising these skills while managing your team. They also discuss how to tailor one's management style because all situations are different and highlight emerging issues such as managing remote teams which has become a norm due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The successful manager is well-stuctured with clear summaries at the end of the chapters making it easy to discern important details in the various chapters. The authors, after writing a chapter describing how to motivate and inspire teams, summarise the important details at the end of the chapter finishing it by saying, "Embrace the characteristics that make you the kind of person who wins the hearts and minds of those around you. Do these things and you will inspire people through your leadership."

The chapters are chronologically arranged, making it easy to understand. For example, the authors start the book by giving reasons why one should become a top-tier manager before going on to describe the characteristics of great managers.

Above all, its practical. It has ideas and examples that are practical and realistic. As a result, anyone can relate to them as they occur in almost every workplace. While describing how a manager should give feedback, the authors give a practical framework and illustrate the framework using easy examples.

James Potter and Mike Kavanagh deserve a 4 out of 4 stars in this one. The book is written in a compelling tone with good grammar and clearly outlines the steps one should take to manage a team effectively and successfully. It would be appealing to students of management, newly-promoted managers and existing managers who wish to up their game. This book will elevate you to greater levels of success and growth on you career by enabling you build high-performance teams.
