In Tuttie Brown’s Happy Day by Jessica Mercado, we are introduced to Tuttie Brown as she heads off to her first day of kindergarten at Happy School. She is nervous about this new venture and doesn’t know what to expect. Once there, she discovers that school isn’t so scary and that her teachers are all intent on helping her become the most that she can be.

I enjoyed the message that this book offers – one of support and inclusion. The artwork is very bright, bold, and colorful. It is a busy book with a lot to draw in the reader’s eye on every page. The pictures clearly show how happy Tuttie Brown is to be where she is, as well as how welcoming the teachers are of her. It is very well done.

I found only three small errors during my read, and so I believe this book to be well-edited. The lack of punctuation (such as periods) is slightly disorienting at first, but it does not detract from the story itself. The flow of this book is quite unique as a result.

I have no complaints about this book beyond the fact that the lack of punctuation took me a minute to acclimate myself to. I would not like to read a longer work written in this particular style, but in this shorter form, it worked quite well. I feel that it all pulls together in a nice bold pattern that is altogether cohesive and appealing to the mind.

As a result, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was an appealing read and the bold scheme worked for this story better than I would have thought possible. The author does a great job of showcasing how young children should feel on their first day of school. The message is one that many young readers should take to heart, even if they do not find their school to be as appealing as Tuttie Brown finds hers.

The audience that this book is best suited for could be any child drawn to bold colors. As well as any readers nervous about their first day of school. Although Happy School is not your typical school, and this might need to be explained to some young readers, it could possibly still ease any trepidation the reader might feel over their first day. There was also no content a parent might find objectionable.
