Are you interested in building your English skills? Do you want to sound more like a native speaker? Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (Japanese Edition) by Peter N. Liptak, Matthew Douma and Jay Douma will give you a new way to express yourself in the English language.

One of the ways to improve your English is to become more familiar with idioms to comprehend what someone means when they use idioms in conversation. This educational book introduces you to about 300 idioms that you may encounter most often in written or spoken conversations. The idioms are categorised into 25 thematic chapters that can be read or studied in any order. For example, chapter 5 contains idioms about weather conditions. Each idiom is first defined in a short precise way that is easily understood. Then, it is put into a Japanese sentence for Japanese students to deduce the meaning of the idiom. The idiom is also used in an English sentence for students to understand how it is used in the English language. Whenever further clarification is needed, the book explains when and how the idiom is used. For instance, it explains if an idiom is usually used for someone very close or if certain adjectives are often added to an idiom.

Although idioms may seem complicated, they can actually be a lot of fun to learn with this book which attempts to teach idioms in a very interesting way. Since it is easier to remember words than idioms because idioms are a chain of 3 or more words, at the end of each chapter, there are exercises with answers where you fill in the blanks with one of the idioms in the chapter. There is also a short story where all the idioms in the chapter are used in a very clever way. I find telling a story to teach English idioms is greatly successful, especially for kids. In addition, answering the story questions makes remembering the idiom's chain of words and then speaking them in the correct sequence easier. Furthermore, there is a crossword after every 5 chapters which is another fun way to learn the idioms. I think the ability to solve these crosswords require several skills, like exact spelling, that may be useful when it comes to language learning.

The book is exceptionally well-edited. I enjoyed reading this book and there is nothing that I did not like about it. I believe the book is extremely helpful to get familiar with idioms and know the context in which they should be used. Something I also liked is that the idioms of each chapter are written in the table of contents beneath the chapter title. So if you need to return to the book to find an idiom, you can quickly find it there. In my opinion, this book is a winner and therefore I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

Because it is a Japanese edition everything is translated to Japanese, however, anyone who understands English can benefit from this book. I highly recommend this book to students of all ages who want to boost their English language skills. I believe students would find the book a fun and effective learning tool to improve their conversational skills and to feel more comfortable and confident with their conversational abilities. This book may also appeal to people who want to explore the English language in a deeper way and use idioms in their everyday conversations just like native speakers.
