HEMINGWAY'S DAUGHTER, written by Christine Whitehead, is a historical fiction that describes the life of the fictional daughter of Ernest Hemingway named Finley Hemingway. She was born by Ernest Hemingway's first wife, Hadley Richardson Hemingway Mowrer. From her childhood, Finley had a deep connection with her father. Unfortunately, Ernest, who was a famous writer, was also an alcoholic and a womanizer. Despite his faults, Finley loved him and always strived for his attention. Unfortunately, he did not have a stable presence in her life. It was her mother that was truly there for her. Being Hemingway's daughter was both a blessing and a curse. Finley was bullied in school because of who her father was. She was expected to live up to his achievements.

Finley decided to become a lawyer. That was a very difficult goal to achieve. At the time when Finley was trying to become a lawyer, women were not expected to become lawyers. No one wanted to hire a female lawyer. As well, Finley struggled with the Hemingway family curse. It was well-known that romantic relationships always ended badly for every Hemingway. Was she able to overcome her challenges and live a successful life?

From the first page, Christine captivated my mind. This book is an incredible mix of fiction and reality. I constantly had to remind myself that Finley is a fictional character. Christine creates Finley with great skill. Finley is a likeable, realistic, and believable character. Christine does an excellent job by skillfully making Finley a part of Ernest Hemingway's life. For instance, Christine creates believable relationships between Finley and her brothers. From the pages of this book, it is obvious that the author conducted extensive research into the life and works of Ernest Hemingway. This reflects in the detail and accuracy of the story. This novel is exceptionally edited; I did not find any errors in it.

HEMINGWAY'S DAUGHTER is not just about Finley Hemingway. This novel tells the story of Ernest Hemingway in a compassionate way. It reflects his talent, skill, hard work, personality, achievements, and impact. As well, it reflects his flaws, such as selfishness, womanizing, and alcoholism. The personality of Ernest Hemingway is expressed in the structure of the book. Every chapter begins with a quote from one of his works. This book is a must-read! Gender inequality is thoroughly examined in this book; this is reflected in the professional challenges which Finley faced.

I did not observe any negative features in this novel; hence, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to every fan of Ernest Hemingway.
