Sock Lobsters, by Michelle Bulriss, is a lovely children’s book about two socks that come to life after being made with magic yarn. The socks, Sebastian and Lola, could not be more different in personality, but they love each other all the same. Unfortunately, Lola is left behind after a trip to the laundromat. Sebastian goes through the five stages of grief as he tries to come to terms with the loss of his best friend. He wonders if he will ever be reunited with his other half.

This book was absolutely adorable. I loved the illustrations (also by Michelle Bulriss) as they brought the story to life and will definitely capture the attention of young readers. I also like how she added captions to the pictures so that the readers could better connect them to the story. She is using this fun, fantasy story to teach children how they can deal with grief in their lives, which I think is important. She explains the process in words that they can understand and, coupled with a discussion with their parents, will be able to apply to real-life situations involving loss.

I could not find a single thing to dislike about this book. I also only found one error, so I believe that it was professionally edited as well.

Based on these aspects, I would rate this book a perfect 4 out of 4 stars. Bulriss tackles a sensitive topic with ease and creativity. She writes a unique story that will help her readers through difficult times, whether it be the loss of a beloved toy, pet, or family member.

I would recommend this book to children aged 2-6 as a read-aloud experience with their parents. This would allow an important discussion to take place since it might be the first time they are learning about grief.
