Review of Takes More Than Heart
I enjoy books and stories that promote positive messages especially in this challenging era we live in. Dennis Mellen promotes his journey of never wanting to “stop getting better”, like a drill sergeant and a friend. He encourages positivity but doesn’t give it to the reader floating on a cloud or a bed of roses. Roses have thorns. Dennis tells you you have to get up and work for what you want. However, he does remind us that it's “not work if you love it.”
It shouldn’t take a near-death experience to understand what is important and how to deal with the many obstacles that come in this short life. Dennis Mellon has already covered that part for us. He shares his experiences willingly and with the hope that people can learn from his rocky road, and create a smoother road to what is next.
Dennis allows you to walk in his shoes before and after he had a heart attack. He was blessed with a solid foundation and a happy life. He had a great career in aviation for over 25 years, a loving family, and a positive outlook to keep moving ahead. I like that he was honest about loving his life. It really helps the reader to understand why it was so hard for him to consider finding a new road to travel when the road he was on became blocked. Through failure and with determination, Dennis relearned and recultivated new ways to maintain and utilize his experiences to become effective in his daily life. I really embraced his many challenges moving past the “Why me” section of his circumstances. He had to confront himself through the stages of grief and choose faith over his fears to guide him through.
His road of a good life had familiar bumps and turns that he found comfort in. When his comfy way of life became blocked with his new situation, he found that it wasn’t a new road he needed. He just had to find a way over the wall that blocked him. His suggestions to the readers are not about taking the road you know won't work for you. They are definitely not about going backward on it either. Dennis suggests not letting the challenges that will come on any road stifle you. Instead, he shows how to take the challenge and make it work for you. It may mean going around, going over, or going through the wall. You may even consider taking roads you never considered. Just don’t give up! Dennis continues moving forward and I couldn’t find anything negative about that.
After you fight to regain courage and positivity after a life-shattering event, what will you do with all you’ve worked for? Dennis chose to share his message through remembrance of his own mentoring tools: the 30-year plan, S.E.R.E. (survival, evasion, resistance, escape), and POW training. Each of these tools of training removed his excuses to give up. On this road, he was able to reach a hand back, teach and uplift others. His goal to change one person, one day at a time, kept him motivated too. His plan became not what he wanted to do with his life, his life became the gift he wanted to share with others after learning change doesn’t mean failure. The road, rocky or smooth, doesn't have to be traveled alone. He was able to realize that with family, friends, and God - he was never alone.
I rate Takes more than heart: Change the journey’s challenges into opportunities by Dennis Mellen a 4 out of 4 stars. This nonfiction biographical story is for anyone striving to keep moving forward. It's not life that stops us from moving forward. We stop ourselves.
Dennis provides great takeaways on challenge versus opportunity, how positive reactions affect outcomes, and the importance of five people in your life helping knockdown or move past blocks in your path. Also, the inspirational quotes Dennis added were a great transition from chapter to chapter. The book is packed with motivational words from celebrities and people who affected his life.
There were no errors that distracted me during reading. I found Takes More Than Heart easy to follow and reflected on “W.I.N” for myself and how not to be stifled by challenges. When we realize we can “D.W.I.”, we can do more than we imagine. If you are curious to find out how Dennis overcame his obstacles, what these acronyms mean to him, this is a book you want to add to your positive reading resources. Reading Takes More Than Heart adds some incentive to get over your own walls on your road to whatever is next.
