Butterflies are considered one of the most emblematic animals. They usually represent a transformation and change. It is in the Italian's belief that when a loved one dies, their spirit lives on in the form of a butterfly. Butterfly Awakens: A Memoir of Transformation Through Grief by Meg Nocero is the story of how the author was able to move on from her mother's death. When Meg's mother was diagnosed with cancer, she had all hopes that she would recover. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her illness. This sent Meg into a downward spiral. We follow her as she goes on her transformational journey. Have you ever lost someone to a disease or by other means? How did you find the strength to pull through?

I must commend the author on how touching and inspiring this memoir was. From the very first chapter, I felt connected to the author. She uses the example of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly to show her transformation through grief. In the first stage, after her mother died, she felt like she was in a cocoon. She felt safe in that cocoon, surrounded by darkness, and didn't feel like she could go on living. Overtime she went through the stages, slowly and figuratively becoming the butterfly she was meant to be. I liked Meg's writing style. The text flowed smoothly, and the narrative was very engrossing. The bond that she had with her mother was very beautiful. She describes how her mother has always been by her side through all the tough and not so tough decisions she had to make.

I didn't really find anything to dislike about this book. It was well-written and seemed to be professionally edited. I only found one typing error through the entire piece. I liked how the author incorporated encouraging sayings at the beginning of each chapter. In some ways, I think they gave the book life.

I would no doubt rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I think the author's journey was an arduous but positive one. She iterates that we can manifest things when we write them down. The author had always wanted to meet Oprah. She wrote it down and in the end, her dream came through. Butterfly Awakens: A Memoir of Transformation Through Grief gives positive inspiration to all its readers.

For anyone going through the grieving process, I would recommend this book to them. It provides the perfect advice to get you out of your cocoon phase and into the beautiful butterfly you were meant to be.

I’ve been wondering whether to read this book, and you do make it sound like I should. I find it a beautiful idea that the grieving process is compared to a lifecycle of a butterfly. I also think that I’d better start writing down my dreams! I don’t dream of meeting Oprah, but I sure have some other dreams I’d love to see coming true.

Thank you for your lovely review!

I do not like to read books about people who have lost their lives in the fight against cancer. It always makes me feel so sad, and it is an abrupt reminder that we are mere mortals. Thank you for such an amazing review.
