Review of The Elf Legacy - Book Five of the Magi Charter
The Elf Legacy is a story about the elves who work to provide the gifts Santa Claus delivers to people. A fictional complex in the north-pole is home to elves, Santa Claus and Merlin. It is an organization having several departments as well as an administration. The elves are organized and structured to be efficient in their duties. The story particularly follows two elves, Anna and Tetsu. Anna is an administrative elf who at first is unsure of where she belongs but grows in age and maturity as she is given more responsibilities. Tetsu is one of Merlin's apprentices who takes over from his master and becomes the defender of the north-pole. When a colleague turns dark and becomes a threat to the mission Tetsu must do what he swore never to do again to protect his friends.
Jordan David spins a tale that shows how a utopia can be corrupted. Where there is good there is always evil. The north-pole should be a place of happiness and peace yet unscrupulous elements still found their way in. Eustace is one of such characters. He was only there for selfish reasons and managed to corrupt a few others.
Anna is the strongest character in the book. I enjoyed following her growth from an uncertain lass who didn't know where she belonged to one who was strong enough to handle many assignments. I love the way Jordan David highlights her strength alongside her weaknesses. The Elf legacy was a bit slow at the beginning but towards the end it really became fast-paced. The battle scene was quite captivating as were the concluding chapters.
I found it rather confusing what the villain's purpose really was. It is my opinion that Emiko's character is underdeveloped, she wasn't given a fixed purpose and that made her a weak antagonist. I also found it a little difficult to keep up with the numerous change of names of certain characters, having to go back to remind myself who is who in the book. Apart from these few observations I enjoyed reading this book.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It's a good story, teaches some moral lessons too. I think it needs more editing but it's a good read.
Christmas lovers will enjoy this book. Anyone who is fascinated with the north-pole and Father Christmas will love The Elf Legacy. There are no obscene words used so preteens and teenagers can read it as well.
