Review of E M P Honeymoon
Technology has taken leaps of faith over the years. The world today has become dependent upon technology across various aspects of life, ranging from its necessity in daily routine life to defending our countries from external or internal security aggression. Every nation maintains its own team of military, researchers, and administrative staff to protect its boundaries from terrorist organizations. Under such circumstances, technology acts as both a boon and a bane. It is a vital need for defence and a source of vulnerability against attack. E-M-P Honeymoon: Kelly and Tom by Dorothy May Mercer is a fast-paced thriller novel that deals with the perils of defending the technology of a nation against terrorism. It has mystery and romance intertwined within its premise, making it a wholesome and entertaining read.
The book speeds up right from the first chapter itself. It introduces us to the protagonists, newlyweds Sgt. Tom Turbulo and Kelly McBride, who are spending their honeymoon at a beautiful island resort in Honduras. The couple is shown to be enjoying even solo outings during their trip. During one such outing, Kelly comes across a quaint gift shop, and she gives up her public transport to explore the shop. She plans to buy antiquities for her family, and therefore enters it, even though it is an unknown place. Surprisingly, the shop leads her to a hidden computer lab that is being used for some dangerous activity. Upon sensing danger, she tries to quickly escape, but she gets noticed by some men there. They attempt to attack and abduct her, but she narrowly escapes. She immediately seeks help by calling her brother, Mike McBride, who is shown to be a Senator. She narrates her ordeals to him and goes to see her husband, who too is surprised at the sudden turn of events. The couple soon find themselves being repeatedly targeted by the terrorists associated with the mysterious laboratory. At the insistence of Mike, the government sends a special team comprising CIA Special Undercover Agent Steve and two bodyguards, Sharon and Agatha, to protect the couple and unearth the mystery behind the events. There also appears to be a mysterious woman on that island with a sinister plan at the back of her mind. Will the couple ever escape from the terrorist organization? Who are the masterminds behind this alleged plan of attack on the United States of America? What is their motive? The answers lie within this page-turner novel.
There are plenty of positive attributes to this book. The writer has done a tremendous job of knitting a scientifically correct thriller. The scientific explanations and information were authentic and did not sound complicated to novice readers. The writing is crisp and weaves together several genres into a single plot, ranging from romance to thriller to suspense to humour to science fiction, without compromising the flow of the story. The words are vivid, and the intense thrills draw the readers towards the narration. The characters are well-etched, and each has an important role to play in this suspense-filled thriller.
I liked the character of Kelly the most. From an ordinary citizen, she transforms into a staunch patriot and readily agrees to risk her life for the country. Her transformation from a normal girl enjoying her honeymoon to someone who suddenly faces dangerous situations is smooth and engaging. I also liked the unsaid, caring bond between Kelly and Mike and their mutual protective nature towards each other in the face of any difficulty.
The negative attributes are few. The title of the novel is a misnomer because there is hardly much romance in the novel. The romantic angle of the protagonists seemed unreal due to their casual attitude towards each other, even in tense situations. The terrorists didn’t seem sinister enough as portrayed by the narration throughout the plot.
There weren’t any notable grammatical errors, which led me to conclude that it was exceptionally well edited. Due to its intriguingly enjoyable plot, I would happily rate it 4 out of 4 stars. This book is suitable for every reader who enjoys reading fiction and is interested in a light-hearted action thriller. It will not interest readers who expect a lot of romantic angles in the story or those who enjoy more dangerous and adventurous novels. Personally, it was a short and sweet book for me with decent thrills in it.
