Review of Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (German Edition)
Idiom Attack Vol 1: Everyday Living (German edition) is filled with idioms used in English conversations to express everyday life. The book divides into themes of expression based on everyday events of life and grouped according to action or expressions. For example, “weather conditions”. The volume of Idiom Attack is a German edition, written both in English and German. The book is structured such that the English idiom, in discussion, is expressed as part of the German sentence, the sentence translates into English and the idiom is defined. Synonyms and antonyms if applies to the idiom are related for further understanding and clarity. There are practice exercises at the end of each chapter. The exercise formats are fill in the blanks and an illustrative story line followed by comprehension and discussion questions.
I am a South African, our business language is English, and we consume a lot of American TV shows. I must admit, I knew most of them as a matter of fact from everyday conversation and television. I am looking to improve my conduct of the English language, relearning the basics. I did just scrap by in my English grades. Therefore, I am reading and studying books that will aid me in improving and rebuilding the blocks. The book is of benefit to me, I learned of idioms that I never came across before, such as, powwow. I added to my grammar basics by being aware of hyphenation of the idiom for correct use of grammar.
I wish that Peter N. Liptak would have expanded more on the hyphenation of some idioms. For examples to illustrate by comparison the use and non-use of hyphenation. I think chapter 25 would have been an opportune moment because I noted that idioms such as, clear-cut, first-rate are hyphenated period, while others work without unless the hyphenation rule apply.
I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. I found the book to be well-structured, and this further assists my understanding and use of idioms. The German in the book did not disturb my experience with the book, even though I do not speak German. English is my second language, and therefore I can appreciate the addition of the English idiom within the German sentence to aid the German reader in understanding the idiom. There are certain instances when you need to think through in your mouth tongue for understanding because of the difference in structures of languages.
I recommend this book to any individual who can read and understand German and wants to add to their understanding of English everyday conversation. To tutors as well, the story discussion questions would be very beneficial within a class setting. To a non-German speaking individual like myself as well, who is looking to refresh their English language skills. Do not be scared off by the number of pages in picking the book, the spacing, illustrations and language edition add to the pages. The book is a quick read, but be ready to apply yourself at the end of each chapter.
