Review of Save A Decade
Save a Decade! How to Work Effectively, Starting Now! by Paul Duduit is a self-help book that educates the reader on various approaches to dealing with work and life that enable people to become more effective and successful. The author introduces the book from a philosophical perspective. The book contains questions that the reader must answer to determine the type of work or career that is best suited to his interests. The author exposes goal-setting strategies that are instrumental to achieving goals. At the fundamental level, the author also addresses mindsets that can set one on a path to either success or failure. Information about dealing with difficult bosses, taking the initiative, and relations with other employees is included in the book. The reader is also guided by examples of successful people in history and the kind of decision-making that elevated them to their highest point.
I like the light-hearted humor with which the author delivered his points. I laughed out loud many times while reading some stories, for example, the story of Aleksander Doba. It is commendable that the book contains a lot of important information about problem-solving methods, daily habits that can improve efficiency and productivity of individuals, active listening, flexibility in dealing with changing circumstances, collaboration tips, and so much more.
I appreciate that the author does not claim to know everything and honestly expresses that what he has shared in the book is what he knows about the topics covered in the book. He mentions many of the experiences that give him credibility to offer advice to other people. What I like the most is that the author emphasizes finding a unique method that helps one to get things done more effectively instead of employing the one-size-fits-all approach.
A major downside of the book is the many illustrations. In driving home some points, the author used many
illustrations that became confusing. It also made the entire book lengthier than it could have been. In some chapters of the book, the humor felt forced, and getting through those chapters was tedious. Also, since I don’t understand the game of baseball, I struggled to relate to many of the illustrations relating to baseball games and players.
I found a few errors in the book, but they are minor and do not detract from the reading experience. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I deducted a star because of the issues I mentioned before.
I recommend this book to employees, employers, business owners, and others who desire to perform better in their businesses, careers, and human relations by improving their listening, speaking, and collaboration skills.
