Review of Strong Heart
Thirteen-year old Sarah is thrust into a camping trip into the Olympic Peninsula wilderness with Tom, the grandfather she just met. Tom and his Native American friends, William and his daughter Myra, have no choice but to take her along on that scheduled camping mission. As they pick their way into the wilderness, Tom, William and Myra share their stories to Sarah and at the same time, they learned about Sarah’s talent, her peculiar gift and the strength of her character. Yet, the growing peaceful familiarity among them is broken when Sarah walks out on them, mad at her grandfather. They search for her for eight days. Then when the search is called off and only Tom and William are left to search for her, Sarah returns to tell her extraordinary adventure and eventually, leads Tom and his friends back into that wilderness with an even pressing mission.
Strong Heart is set in the midst of conflict on mining operations in the Olympic Peninsula wilderness and the endangered tribal lands, interspersed with theories on human dispersal and settlement. These matters are carefully built into the story and do not overshadow the personal story of Sarah and Tom. On the other hand, these concerns serve to heighten the need for them to undertake the second journey into the wilderness.
The chapters flow with ease into the next chapters with vibrant imagery and vivid characters. I particularly like how their personal stories are told at specific points within the journey that highlight what needs to be resolved at specific situations, yet provide a sense of wonder and history into the whole story. These personal stories reveal their own perspectives in life and how these shape their decisions and actions. A sprinkling of Native American wisdom is quite charming. Despite the awkwardness in Sarah’s relationship with her grandfather at the start, Charlie Sheldon is able to show how Sarah came to realize the love of her grandfather and of the people she now considers her family.
I am a bit surprised by the ending. Yet, I still find it satisfactory and promising of new life together. There is actually nothing that I do not like about the story. It is well-paced and well-edited. There is very minimal errors in the book. Strong Heart deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
Young readers will find affinity with the adventures of a girl with extraordinary courage. Adventure readers will also like the interesting take of an adventure within an adventure. Its heartwarming theme of familial love and of finding one’s path will resonate with all readers.
