Review of Man Mission
Eytan Uliel introduces us to four friends. They met in college and have been inseparable since then. During this time in their lives, they decided to do what would be known as a Man Mission. The first one was close by in New Zealand, with only two participants. They were both fresh out of college, eager to advance in their respective careers. Their love lives were similarly fulfilling: Sam was engaged, and our narrator had a loving girlfriend. They had just entered the workforce, and their lives were going according to plan.
During fifteen years, we learn more about our protagonist and their lives. Each year they partake in a new and more exciting trip. This novel, Man Mission, receives its name from these adventures. Their lives throughout these years will be in constant change and will not always follow the plan that they had set far back in college. Some of them will have to wrestle with the grief of losing their “perfect” lives. They will have to achieve happiness where they never thought they could.
On the one hand, I enjoyed the narration style. The protagonist told us about their lives and experiences in a very entertaining and dynamic manner. He interspersed between narrating their everyday lives and what happened in the Man Missions. The author did a great job when creating the characters. As the novel advanced, we got to know them thoroughly. Their experiences were relatable and believable. Even when they made mistakes, you could understand them and care for their wellbeing. They faced risky situations in various places around the world. Seeing how they acted when confronted with their deepest fears, we got to know them even more. Also, there is constant joking and displays of fellowship between the four friends. This aspect makes the book extremely entertaining to read. Also, the novel was exceptionally well-edited.
On the other hand, I did not like that the narration was repetitive. Every Man Mission was almost the same as the one beforehand. However, this allowed the author to focus more on the characters' development. Even though I did not enjoy this, it did not affect my overall perception of the book.
Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Taking into account what I mentioned beforehand, I loved this novel. I enjoyed the characters’ portrayal and the narration style. The structure was a bit repetitive. However, as mentioned before, this allowed the author to develop the characters better.
Lastly, I would recommend this novel to those readers who like books focused on characters. This novel is ideal for those who love to learn about the intricacies of people's lives and thoughts. The protagonists belong to a very specific demographic. Nevertheless, their stories are relatable and entertaining.
