Review of Demon Freaks
[Following is a volunteer review of "Demon Freaks" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
I have nothing but praise for this book. Author J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison did a commendable job with this engrossing piece titled Demon Freaks. To give you a quick summary, a day before their SATs, twin brothers named Bing and Ron and their band-mates, unbeknownst to them, are dragged into the middle of a paranormal skirmish involving three occult organizations, a dagger, monsters, and a demon. Meat, the drummer, gets possessed and kidnapped by a demon dagger named Groomgerock. In a pretty spectacular, wild vehicle pursuit, the twins and Kaitlyn (the keyboard player) chase him to a golf course where the Golf Association (innocent-looking golfers on the front but actually a group of demon-worshiping psychics) is preparing for summoning a demon to control and rule over the world. Kaitlyn and Meat get captured by them to be used as sacrifices for the summoning. To save them, the twins do everything they can. The secret doors, disguising as golfers, fighting the monsters, killing a demon, you name it, and you will find it all in this action-packed, hilarious story of ensuing chaos.
Despite the lack of originality in the plot, the manner of storytelling is near-perfect, with simple yet effective vocabulary. Navigation through chaotic scenes with just the right amount of humor makes it a light-hearted read without sacrificing any thrill or excitement. Despite the supernatural element, the story feels extremely relatable because, believe it or not, every kid, at some point in his own mind, has been a hero of an imaginary world of conspiracies where things and people they see routinely are not what they appear to be. Hardison has picked that fantasy of ours and presented it in the most immersive way possible. He has a real knack for transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.
My only criticism of the book is that it was finished far too fast. There is nothing else that I discovered to be unfavorable. It is well-edited, with almost no mistakes. You would think there would be no lessons to be learned or morals to be gained in such a fast-paced short novel. However, the author once again exceeded my expectations. For example, he quelled practically everyone's anxieties about their fate and position in the larger picture of the universe with such an impactful interaction between twins and their father that it will leave an indelible effect on the reader.
Demon Freaks is definitely a 4 out of 4 stars book. No more words are needed to justify it. Once you start reading it, you will discover it for yourself.
This book is best suited for high school students. If they desire to, kids in that age bracket will find it an engaging and humorous book with some valuable insights into life choices. It’s definitely worth a shot.
