Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is exactly what the title suggests: an expedition undertaken by men for men. The story begins with how two men, who are part of a circle of four male friends, conceive an idea to travel annually to sample different foods from different parts of the world. A few years later, the two friends finally decide to execute the idea and consequently embark on their first journey. The agenda of this trip shifts away from the initial plan, with adventure and engaging in outdoor activities now topping the list.

After a couple of successful tours between the two, their friends join them in the following expeditions. It is a welcome escape from their routine normal lives, and it turns to somewhat a yearly ritual where they can reconnect as men only whilst satisfying their innate desire for adventure and conquest. These trips offer an opportunity to share and reflect on the happenings of their lives, all while bonding to nature, exploring new environments and nurturing their friendship. The author juggles the plot between these trips and their ever-changing individual lives in the spheres of work, partners, relationships and their growing families.

There is a lot that I like about the book but what stands out for me is the beauty of friendship portrayed in the book in terms of providing a support system in the wake of the myriad challenges they encounter individually in their respective lives and as a group during their missions. Through all this they come together and confront the problems head-on, and that way they always come out stronger.

Another positive aspect to pick up from the book is the fact that the story is in touch with reality. The issues that mar the characters are reminiscent of real world drawbacks, and it is nice that the author includes the responses that the characters had for them. It offers hope to keep on keeping on when met with such obstacles, and a kind of assurance that no stumbling block is too large to be overcome. Also, the author employs a generous dash of humor in the group’s conversations that livens the mood while reading. There is nothing that I do not like about the book.

The book is a very good read and therefore I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. The language used is simple and easily understandable. What is even better is that the characters’ lives mirror those of real human beings. It is possible for a reader to gain insight from the book as the situations depicted in it are what many people find themselves in in the world of today. It is a must-read for all men. I would however not recommend it to anyone that cannot stand profanities.
