Review of The First Time Father
[Following is a volunteer review of "The First Time Father" by Thomas Alfie.]
The First Time Father by Thomas Alfie is a great insightful book for every aspiring father-to-be. The book comprises of the roles and responsibilities expected from the father-to-be to his pregnant wife. I am a lady and while reading this book, I could only concur with the author as he was really hitting the nail on the head. Gone are the days when the father-to-be has little or no role to play in the life of his pregnant wife, this book shows us that the role of the upcoming dad shouldn't be neglected or underemphasized as it points out what the upcoming father has to know/do for his pregnant woman.
The book entails the supports women needs from the first trimester down to the third trimester, the emotional support, physical support and lastly the financial support. The book covers what dads-to-be are to expect from their women, the mood swings, the urge for a particular food or snack, the hightened emotions, the sex urges which is prone to increase or decrease at some points, the pumped up energy to work and the battery low form which the author points out to be laziness. The author started this book by giving us an insight of his own journey, he tells us of the how labour was evidently different from just walking your wife to the hospital for antenatal. He talks about how uneasy he was during the active labour of his wife, how he had kept on massaging every area his wife instructs him to, I was actually amused by that.
I am glad the author made emphasis on life after birth of the child and the roles dads are to take on in bringing up a child, frankly speaking, the author was also a man and it will be an understatement if I will say I wasn't awed myself by all the responsibilities the author listed out as the role dads are to take up after the birth of the child but sadly in our society today, dads merely take up these roles. The bonding principles, the YOU time, training your child, insurance plan and finally my favourite part, budget planning. Every ideas listed out by the author was well relayed and it's sure to promote father-child bond.
I like the fact that the author himself is an example of this book as many inferences he made was from his own family while some was from friends, the author totally kept it real. Any First Time Father who picks this book to read will be glad they did because it covers many insightful experience juggled into pages.
All was to my liking and satisfaction I didn't find anything discomforting in this book so I rate it a perfect 4 out of 4 stars.
I strongly recommend this book to all aspiring dad-to-be so they aren't caught unaware of what pregnancy/birth has in stock for them.
