Review of Hattie Vavaseur
Hattie Vasaeur is an aged, respected woman who comes from old money and never found herself starting a family. After being picked up from a funeral by a vaguely familiar chauffeur, Hattie finds herself in a stranger’s mansion. Had she agreed to visit? Hattie couldn’t remember. Hattie couldn’t remember many things from her life; perhaps it was just the headaches. The master of the house kept himself secluded from Hattie. In his sparse appearances, he presents himself as short-tempered. Early into her stay at the mansion, Hattie is dragged into an Occult shop and meets Valmelda, a fortune teller who insists on calling her “sweetums.” From there, Valmelda starts a mission to help Hattie regain her memory, which spirals into investigating the murder of an American man Hattie is sure she has never met. What does this mystery have to do with Hattie, and how is it related to her past?
Hattie Vavaseur by M. Rebecca Wildsmith is a thrilling story that combines murder mystery and romance. While reading, I found close to no grammar or spelling mistakes. The characters are well thought out, and the main characters are developed wonderfully. The writing of Valmelda was almost perfect. Despite not being the main protagonist, I believe she is the book’s best character. Her dialogue is hilarious, and I could hear her voice in my head as I read through the book. Whenever Valmelda was present in a chapter, I knew it would be a good chapter. Additionally, Hattie was a well-crafted main character with a distinguished and elevated character arch. Hattie’s character tone was well defined at the beginning of the story, and there was no point where Hattie felt out of character.
In terms of the negative aspects of the story, in my opinion, there were almost none. One point I can make is that some plot twists felt under-explained and caused me to read back a couple of pages to understand what just happened. I enjoyed the plot twists, but some could have been more developed. Additionally, the story’s climax was slightly underwhelming when I believe there could have been more to it.
After reading Hattie Vavaseur and considering the characters, plot line and twists, and my overall enjoyment of the book, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Even though I nick-picked the plot twists and the climax, this was a fantastic read. I would happily re-read this in a couple of years. In all honesty, I would rate this a 4 out of 4 stars for Vamelda’s character alone. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a great character she is.
I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical murder mysteries, as this is set in the 1920s. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy romances about fated lovers. I would only recommend this to older teens and adults because some dated terms are a bit complex and require a dictionary search.
