Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
As normal humans leading a conventional life, we often feel a strange sense of connection to the world of fantasy and magic. We have grown up hearing stories of fairies and demons. The fictional world of fantasy attracts us due to its mysterious backdrop and the adventures associated with it. It gives us an avenue to overcome the boredom of this world. I hardly know of anyone who hasn’t read the Harry Potter series or the Lord of the Rings trilogy. If you have ever been a fan of these books and find solace in reading about magic and the triumph of good over evil, then this book belonging to the We Are Voulhire series will keep you hooked till the end. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first installment in the series of books under the title. There are altogether 9 books in the series. The genre of this book is fantasy fiction and it has ample doses of adventure, mysteries, action, and thrills. For ease of understanding, there are exhaustive descriptions of places and characters.
The book begins with an exhaustive geographical map of the fictional world of Voulhire. The novel is divided into separate parts depending on the arrival of the characters. It is a land of magic and has seen the rise and fall of some of the greatest nobles, kings, and rebels. The story starts with the rise of a powerful yet evil person, Lord Meldorath, who reminded me of Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter franchise. He has an evil aura around him and knows black magic. During his reign, the entire country and its citizens were shown to be panic-stricken. Thereafter, Wilhelm Arcolo, the king of Voulhire, is shown to appoint another person as the lord of the land by announcing the death of Lord Meldorath. This bold step from the king’s end has an air of mystery around it, given the immense power of Lord Meldorath. The chief protagonist of the story is Galen Bray, a refugee from the Land of the Princes. He is called to Voulhire after the mysterious death of his uncle to inherit his legacy as a blacksmith. Being poverty-stricken, he leaves for the mysterious land of Voulhire, expecting a better life, but little does he know that great dangers await him. Rowan befriends Galen and accompanies him to the land of mysteries. As the story unfolds, the character of Galen takes great strides in maturing into a brave individual. He also gets intrigued by the secrets of the land, along with the ominous presence of Lord Meldorath, despite his absence. Sins and manipulations rule the country, and Galen begins a journey of self-discovery and uncovering the secrets of the country. Will he succeed in his mission? What is the mystery surrounding the king, his council, and the new lord? Will Meldorath ever return? The book is the answer to all these questions.
The positive things about this book are noteworthy. I was amazed at the author's writing skills. The writing style is exceptionally powerful and vividly descriptive. It transforms you into the world of fantasy, and the picturesque style of writing makes you feel like you are a part of the land. The characters have been etched beautifully such that even the inconsequent ones have a strong foothold in the story. The mystery builds well and keeps you glued to the end. The language is simple and the pace is seamless. The plot is tight, and the subplots don’t sway the reader away from the central theme.
The thing that I disliked about this book was the difficulty I faced in analyzing the large number of characters introduced at regular intervals. At times, the story felt dragged and confused, with the timelines being vague. The story ends on a cliff-hanger, and that becomes a bit of a disappointment.
My favourite character was Rowan. His immense knowledge and simple personality left me awestruck. I was delighted with his sense of humour. It makes the story even more interesting. His helpful nature and brave demeanour spoke volumes of his courageous character. He was an able instructor and guided the protagonist well throughout the story.
The book was professionally edited with hardly any conceivable errors. Based on all my observations, the positives outweigh the negatives in this book. Thus, I am compelled to rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Regarding my recommendations for the type of readers who can read this, I can say that this book isn’t for children. There is profanity, brutal scenes, and sexual content in the novel, thereby making it unsuitable for young readers. The mature audience can enjoy the storyline and ride the adventurous journey.
