Review of End of the Last Great Kingdom
End of the Last Great Kingdom by Victor Rose is the first book in The Brimstone Chronicles. This is definitely not a book to judge by its cover as it does not have hardly anything to do with fairies and focuses mainly on the Enlightened which is a type of mage, in fact, fairies are only mentioned once or twice in the first chapter of the book and then never seen again. With that being said the book is still very well written with no errors that I noticed. This is a fantasy story that I chance to label as high fantasy given the fact that it is a series.
As the story begins we meet Leaf a boy about to attempt his challenge to enter the Mage School. Since he cannot control any of the elements in a desperate attempt to secure his position he chooses trial by combat. Surprisingly enough at the last minute, he is saved by a wall of fire and when he awakens he takes on the name Brimstone. His miraculous show of fire earns him the chance to stay at the Mage School as a Battle-mage, despite not actually being able to control the element. It is during his training to become a Battle-mage that he meets a demon by the name of Heat and together they form team Crimson for the Mage Battles.
Unfortunately during the first Mage-Battle of the year, a beast is released that kills some of the other students. Although Brimstone was not responsible he takes the fall for it as ordered by The Order. Brimstone manages to escape and his friends also leave the Mage School to go and help him. They discovered The Order trying to take over and agreed to help Brimstone as he finds the other parts of his soul in order to become a very powerful mage and a symbol of the Rebellion.
What I like best about this book was the author's use of the many different often found in fantasy stories. The book contains everything from elves, half-elves. Mages, orcs, dwarves, trolls, and so many more. Although I do wish the different races had a more prominent role in the book I have reason to believe that this will be the case and future installations of the series. What I didn't like about this book was the fact that although Brimstone is cursed and his soul a split apart into pieces it is never explained why. I can only hope that this will be fixed and future additions to the series. It also tends to drag a bit.
Overall I believe this book is very well run and has been professionally edited and written as I did not find any editorial flaws or spelling mistakes. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, a perfect score. This book is well suited for anyone from adults to preteens. And it is possible though, that younger readers might find it a bit boring times. There is no vulgar language and only slight hints at adult content so nothing an appropriate for younger readers.
