Daily DASH for Weight Loss: A Day-By-Day DASH Weight Loss
I received an early review copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I wanted this book because my DH has recently been required to switch to a low-salt diet. No, you cannot take your favorite recipes and just cut out the salt. They will not taste good. The best low-sodium recipes have intense flavors of some sort in them. I count a meal a success when my DH says, "I can't believe that was low salt!" It's true, food can taste good without all the added salt. I guarantee you that once you start down this road, foods high in salt will no longer even taste good to you.
Now that I have told you more about my family health and personal opinions than you ever cared to hear, let's get on to the review of this book.
The Diet Details:
The DASH diet is very sensible. It is less about a quick weight loss and more about learning a new way to eat for the rest of your life. To lose weight, you follow the diet, reduce your caloric intake by approximately 500 calories, and exercise. To maintain your weight you follow the DASH diet and exercise without reducing the calorie intake. I know, all very sensible. There are no magic cures for weight loss but this system will work, slowly (1-2 lbs per week maximum) but surely. The beginning of the book goes over all the details about the diet - how it works, why it works (physically), and health benefits of the diet (not just weight loss). All very sensible stuff. The diet comes across as very doable and also very forgiving of lapses.
Meal Plans:
The diet requires you to think about portion control. This is outlined carefully and they assure the reader it will become second nature over time. There are several weeks of meal plans which make portion control easy. The meals are complete (main course, sides, snacks, etc.). Also, something I appreciate, all of the suggested food is also presented in the recipe section. There is no running around trying to figure out any of the food items. Simply go to the store, buy the ingredients, and follow the plan.
Recipes:
This is my favorite part and really why I wanted the book. Our doctor had already sold us on the DASh diet, I was just eager for recipes and meal plans to make is all easier. The recipes in this book are the star. They deliver on flavor and satisfaction. I've tried several breakfast items and a couple of the dinners. I plan on eating my way through all the food presented here. I only have twos small niggling complaints. The first is that the appetizers seem to be a series of dips. I hate dips of all sorts - they are nasty and do not appeal to me. I'm pretty sure that there are other options out there. Also, there are not enough pictures. I'm very visual and like to see how the food should look when completed properly. Food should (and can) look good as well as taste good. I won't eat something that doesn't look appetizing. Hmmm - maybe that is why I don't like dips! Well, writing can be cathartic.
Overall - a treasure and a real resource for out diet.
Thank you for giving me a chance to be an early reviewer of this book.
