We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book in the We Are Voulhire series by Matthew Tysz. It introduces the hero Galen Bray, the “villain” Meldorah and King Wilhelm. Meldorah is the greatest mage in Hillport. He discovers Lord Orlin is a pedophile and kills him to the praise of the people. He is then appointed Lord of Hillport by the king. But even he is not perfect—he is arrested by the king for practicing dark magic on humans and declared dead, but the question on everyone’s lips is ‘is he really dead?’ Galen moves to Magnum Caelum from the war-torn Land of the Princes to fulfill his uncle’s dying wish that he take over Onita Steel. He embarks on a journey with Rowan to acquire iron for his forge, but this journey turns out to be so much more. They discover a never-before-seen rock with magic powers. They must find an Imbuer to give them a clue as to the value of the rock before the mage causes harm with it. Meanwhile, Lord Eldus has been appointed as the new lord of Hillport. He has great plans for Hillport and has started rebuilding, but disaster strikes again. Will he survive? After all, bad luck always strikes in threes.

I love this book. I really cannot wait to read the next book in this series. The author really did a great job. He used simple diction to create a story that was easy to read and enjoy. The book was professionally edited. The different settings were quite detailed, same as the characters who populate the book. The book had a few sub-plots, all of which the author perfectly entwined to create the main plot. It addressed issues ranging from science to psychology. The suspense was just thrilling. I literally finished this book in a day. I could not drop it till I was done. It had me questioning everything and everyone till the very last page. Who is the bad guy? Trust me, you will not find out; I certainly did not.

I loved everything about this book. It was easy to read, professionally edited and well-written. I do have a little bone to pick with the author, though, because he killed off my favorite character before the end of the book, which just about broke my heart.

I will be rating this book four out of four stars because the author did a really good job with all the aspects of this book—from the characters to the settings, storyline and plot.

I recommend this book for readers of suspense, paranormal, adventure, and historical fiction. It is suitable for teenage, young adult, and adult readers.
