We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a wonderful take on magic, power, greed and the naivety of those who are no longer stuck in survival mode. Following the perspective of multiple people the reader gets a greater understanding of the setting, the mood and the motives each character has in what they believe is the right thing to do.

The multiple perspective points follow Galen Bray, rescued from the Isle of Princes as he inherits his uncle’s home and forge in Magnum Caelum. He sets out with his uncle’s executor, Rowan, to acquire more metal to practise his blacksmith skills. Throughout they explore the land and make the journey all the way to Yamon Soul to find an imbuer to help in their discoveries of a strange stone. King Wilhelm Arcolo of Voulhire is determined to keep his land in its prosperous state and abolish any and all rumours that the powerful mage Dalehei Meldorath is still alive.

Judge turned Lord, Eldus Alderman moves to Hillport at the request of the King to improve this seaside village to a better economic standing, as well as to repair the damage Lord Orlin and Dalehei Meldorath had left in their wake. Vice Chancellor Indara Nightla works in her own way to improve the whole of Voulhire, staying on the job much longer than most. And finally High Chancellor Midius Maido, the second most powerful man in Voulhire. Midius trains the young prince to become the king one day, as well as trying to maintain order against their enemy the Riva Rohavi.

The positive aspects about this book for me is its descriptive language, the reader can fully envision the landscape and scene or mood the writer is trying to create. The writer also leaves the ending of this book very open which makes the reader excited to know what will follow next. The overall story and the way that it is brought across keeps the readers engaged, there is just enough vagueness in some of the chapters to keep the reader on edge.

I have no negative commentary on this book.

I am rating this book a 4 out of 4 stars . The writer spent a great deal in combining the physical and magical world. The characters are written in such a way that you can sympathise with them all including the antagonist(s). This book is exceptionally well edited.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves magic, defying the laws of natural order and suspense. The book is also for readers ready to commit themselves to a new magical series as this is an ongoing series. There is some profanity in the book, but it is not the focus of the story.
