A Healer's Journey is a book about ancient Chinese society set during the Ming dynasty written by Colene Sawyer Schlaepfer. Weilin is born into a life of slavery, with his destiny already set as a builder of the Great Wall of China. His mother, on the other hand, does not want this life for him and instead teaches him about plants and how to survive in the wilderness. This is to prepare him for his eventual escape at the age of fourteen. He successfully escapes, and we get to follow him through his life during this fascinating period in Chinese history.

I admired the characters in the story for their great love. Especially by Weilin's mother, who desires a better future for her son and goes to great lengths to provide it for him. When we see the wonderful man Weilin grows into, we see the importance of nurturing. He embodies his mother's nurturing nature and passes on the lessons he learned from her to his own children and those around him. In addition, the people he meets, such as Uncle and Auntie Wong, also help him grow by demonstrating empathy and compassion.

It was amazing to see him overcome adversity and create a wonderful life with his own two hands. It was also fascinating to learn about various aspects of Chinese culture from this book. I learned about filial piety, betrothal and marriage customs, and festivals to remember the dead, such as the Qingming Festival, to name a few. These topics were brought to life by the characters, and it was fascinating to see a glimpse of a bygone era.

Learning a little bit about ancient Chinese medicine was something I did not expect but was a pleasant surprise. I was surprised that the remedies discussed by the main character Weilin seemed plausible. I looked up some of them, such as the various uses of honey and mint, and discovered that they are still relevant today. It is always a joy to learn something useful that will improve your life.

There was only one aspect of the book that I did not enjoy. The dialogue was a little stilted for me, and the conversations came across as awkward. It would be fantastic if the author could make the conversations sound more natural.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was a fascinating account of the life of a man living in a bygone era. While reading the book, I didn't notice a single typo, spelling, or grammar error, so I believe it was exceptionally well edited. I recommend this book to people who like historical fiction. People interested in ancient Chinese culture may also find this book interesting.

Isn't this intriguing to say the least? It's one of the biggest blessings to own a mother with a good heart. She could sacrifice anything for you, even if she won't be part of that life, she would give it up just for you to get a better one. Guess the protagonist of this book, had it nice there.
