Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer is a step-by-step blueprint to finding more security and happiness now, but especially to effectively plan ahead for retirement in realistic and implementable ways, for every lifestyle. Although Fleischauer focuses on the population above 40 years of life, the resources, and tools he provides, as well as the frequent humor sprinkled throughout most of the pages, can be instruments for great change in almost anyone’s life. Each chapter builds upon the previous one, covering topics from judgment-free self-examination and basic attitude changes to insurance and financial support options. If nothing else, the informational reading list provided by the author alone is lengthy and inclusive.

The author easily conveys his passion for financial security and a fulfilled life in a fast-paced, well-articulated, amusingly sarcastic tone. Reconfigurement is interspersed with frequent, surprisingly relevant, and relatable “dad-jokes” which make it easy to stay focused on the information even when it is as dry as annuities and such. But more so, chapter one starts with easily applied options that don’t really require much eternal action, only introspection. And every chapter provides more options in easy-to-follow, extremely well-organized, and clearly described steps, acknowledging real-life obstacles on various fronts, addressing the difficulty to think outside the box when it comes to work, thinking of the long game, and stepping onward and forward when the time is right and the plans have been made and are being executed to achieve the desired change of more financial freedom and more personal happiness as a goal, rather than a resulting effect.

Through Reconfigurement, the author also addresses that future planning doesn’t have to be intimidating or scary! With assurances and example stories, Fleischauer encourages the reader by pointing out that most people do not excel at planning ahead for retirement and even mentions statistics to show how many workers do not have a secure, independent, or fulfilled future even in retirement. He then swiftly moves on, showing chapter by chapter the different steps and options available and even discusses the reasons for and behind them all in depth. I was happy to note, after reading this book, that I actually know a little more about ways to invest money for the future than I did before! And I chuckled and nodded my way through the information, taking notes, and wanting to know more as the author’s excitement became my own through new knowledge.

I did not find a real negative aspect to this informational and useful book. At times I felt just a little that the tone of the author was just a little too familiar, or too friendly. However, professionalism was preserved through the well-edited words and the eloquent and direct way with which the author explained his reasons. The whole book felt more like a conversation than a read.

I rate Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer 4 out of 4 stars. This is a clearly laid out, easy-to-follow, and implement manual to start improving your life now and into retirement with real-life, step-by-step solutions. I recommend this book especially to anyone over 40 looking to “reconfigure” their careers and retirement options. However, any adult can benefit from this information at any time to start planning ahead.
