Toni is a busy superhero, but what does he like to do during the times he is not being a hero? What are his hobbies and interests? Read Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base to learn the answers to these questions.

This is a very simple book with no plot. According to the author, it was written with the intention to help children learn to read. The sentences are structured very simply and are very repetitive. The repetitiveness does mean that children older than five would find it boring to read more than once.

My favorite thing about this book was the variety of activities that Toni likes, from drawing to playing with friends, and even helping out around the house. Every kid reading this book, or having it read to them, is sure to see at least one thing that makes them think, “I like to do that too!”

The vocabulary is also simple with most of the words being ones that children would already be used to hearing. Even the few harder words that they may not be used to, like terrific, would be easy enough for them to sound out.

The illustrations are nice. While they aren’t the best I’ve ever seen, they’re bright and colorful and work well for the book. I particularly liked the attention-grabbing cover art, which shows Toni holding up stacks of things that are shown in the book. And for toddlers who aren’t learning to read yet, this book can also work well as a picture book because the illustrations clearly show Toni having fun as he does each activity.

Overall, this is a nice book for all children ages 2-5. Since I can not find any fault with it, and there are no editing mistakes, I’m rating Toni the Superhero 4 out of 4 stars.
