Review of The First Time Father
[Following is a volunteer review of "The First Time Father" by Thomas Alfie.]
The First Time Father by Thomas Alfie is an informative and motivational guide for first-time fatherhood. Alfie recounts the time when he first became a father in the book and how his experience impacted him. He discusses the expectations, struggles, demands, and anxieties that accompany an expectant father. Alfie also talks in detail about pregnancy and its impact on women’s lives and bodies. Then he elaborates on the role and responsibilities of being a father.
The first positive about the book was the male point of view it gave. Despite reading a few books on motherhood, this was the first book I read on fatherhood. It was entirely not what I expected. It was straightforward, and it sympathizes not just with fathers but pregnancy and childcare. Specifically, the book provided insight into the views, thoughts, and concerns men have on the topic of fatherhood and how to work through them. This, I think, would be comforting to many. It would also help them normalize and deal with their fears and anxieties. It, in turn, will encourage more men to communicate with, be more supportive, and work with their wives in raising the children. The second positive is the focus being mainly on what would be good for the baby before and after it’s born, the mother during and after pregnancy, and the fathers during and after these periods. That is, what they need to prepare for and how. The third positive thing about the book is that the author also goes into detail about attachment style, parenting style, and how these things influence your relationship with your children. It is significant because these things impact the development and future of children.
There was nothing I would consider negative about the book. The book had so much beneficial advice for the whole family. It includes tips on how to deal with the difficulties in each stage, starting from the mother’s pregnancy, the child’s infancy, and raising the child. The book is direct, simple, and short. It points out and discusses the role of fathers in the lives of their children, stressing the importance of them being involved in child care. It especially points out the positive impact that that has on them and the children.
I give this book a 4 out of 4. I did not find any typos, grammar, spelling, or punctuation mistakes in the book. Therefore, I believe the book was exceptionally well-edited.
I recommend this book to people wanting to understand the perspective of first-time fathers or people looking for information on parenthood. I also recommend this book to men who are fathers or expectant fathers who want some information or guidance in the area.
